Broken toe - how long to recover?

Anyone know roughly how long it takes for a broken toe to heal to the point that running/riding will not do further damage. At Steelhead this weekend I fought with the mat out of T1, and I lost. I broke my toe (the one next to the ‘pinkie’ toe). Not sure how long to wait before training. Anyone with any knowledge, personal experience, etc. info would be appreciated. thx

Glad you kicked its ass before I got there. For the record, I had your back and was ready to jump in if you didn’t beat it down.

What kind of fracture? I assume you’ve went to the doctor and had an X-ray.

Yep I sure do. I broke my pinky toe in half the day before Captex in Austin. Had to be reset. Doc said I could ride the trainer and swim immeadiately. He said the only limiting factor would be the pain I felt. I did however have to pretty much stop running for about 4 weeks. I would do very short runs, depending on swelling/pain. Took 6 weeks to get back to where I forgot I broke it.

I always break toes. I just tape it up and carry on.

Broke the same toe about two weeks ago. I was on crutches for knee surgery at the time and I kicked the crutch while stagering to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Hurt like nobody’s business I’ll tell you !!! Now I have a bum right knee and a tender toe on my left foot. Just tape it to your middle toe and move on with life. It will be a good 4-6 weeks before you are totally symptom free.

Cheers,

Dave

It entirely depends if it really is broke (many people think they broke their toe and did not) and if the fx is unstable or intra-articular. Most do well in about 6 weeks with simple tape immobilization for a couple of weeks. Others need to be closed reduced. Rare cases need percutaneous pinning. Train whenever the toe will let you (i.e. swimming immediately, biking within a day or two, running varies a lot.

Totally N=1 but I did L.A. Marathon about 3 weeks after breaking a toe. Took a couple of days off, taped it to my other toes and ran as much as the pain would allow.

snap!

they didn’t have to put a pin or anything in that one?

haha, nice choice of words!

no pins. The bones fit back like a puzzle piece and there were no chips or fragments, so I really lucked out.
