The problem isn’t your chain…

The main problem with 10 speed chains is the connection, easy to get it wrong(weak) when connecting it. Connex Wipperman makes the best chains available, also for Shimano 10, with a safe lock (which can be reopened at any time to dismount the chain for cleaning.)

where/why/how did you break them? spec out your drive train if you will … what components do you use and what type of riding do you do?

I agree that it probably isn’t your chain. (Though the only chains I’ve broken are Shimano.) More likely it’s the installation or your drivetrain. So I agree with Gary, whaddyagot on there?

FWIW I ride Wipperman and SRAM, though I prefer the Wipperman.

All my components are Dura Ace 10.It has happen on 2 different bikes.A Cervelo Soloist and a Serotta Legend Ti.

i’m in agreement with the others who’ve posted. i’m not a fan of shimano and campy chains and their connector systems (for 9sp and 10sp) but 3 chains in a short time frame makes me think user error during assembly.

i’m also in agreement that wippermann chains are a whole generation ahead of anything campy or shimano is going to put their name on. also, wippermann has a new 10sp shimano chain (i have one in my possession) and that’s what i’d put on my bike if i were you. in fact, wippermann’s 9sp and 10sp chains are on all of my bikes.

Dan… what about the SRAM chains?

Do you suffer from “CLUTCHISM”

haven’t heard of it…it’s when you only shift under power and only 5-6 gears at a time while totally crosschained.

I used to get it when i rode mountain bikes, ya-know, the tripple crank etc…

I took a chill pill and it helped me out!

Dan,

Can you give a more detailed write up of why you think the wippermann chains are generations ahead of campy/shimano? I’ve been tempted to buy one, but seeing that I can get two DA chains for the price of one Wippermann, I’ve been hesitant.

Maybe it’s material for the front page? Or will this be a part of your drivetrain portion of the 2005 ideal tri bike specs?

thanks!

I’m a big fan of the SRAM chains and their powerlink. I’ve got the 9spd hollow pin version on all of my bikes. I don’t know if they have a 10spd chain yet, though.

Either SRAM or Wipperman are worth their $ simply for the ease of removal. I can deep clean my chain weekly, taking it off and soaking it in degreaser…makes a huge difference in drivetrain sluggishness and cassette wear. I NEVER did that with Shimano chains…

Or you can use a Wipperman link on your Shimano or Campy 10-speed chain. I use them and they work great. I have been hesitant to try a Wipperman chain on my otherwise Campy drivetrain, since Campy is usually pretty adamant about keeping the drivetrain “pure” (and their chains seem to be pretty meticulously beveled and shaped).

You don’t need a stronger one. I don’t even know you and can tell you that you can’t come close to busting a properly installed chain. You just need to install it right… those side plates are thin, and if you don’t have the pin centered between them perfectly POOF there goes your connection. I know this first hand.

I love the D10 chain… thinner than Campy, so it shifts cleaner. But I swapped to Wipperman for the quick link and longer life (D10s are good for ~1500 miles).

it is the stupid link pin…breaks off too short or too long…

SRAM and wippermann chains both have a connecting link that makes them each better than campy or shimano. yes, if your campy or shimano chain breaks it’s probably due to user error on the connecting link. however, it’s very easy for the user to err. so, i think the entire system represents a flawed design on 9sp and 10sp.

hence, i like wippermann and SRAM. my concern with SRAM is that they’ve moved that factory to portugal, to take advantage of certain financial advantages. i’m not sure what that means for quality. i don’t know what SRAM is doing to make sure its costs are in line, where it’s buying its steel, etc.

wippermann is a 100 year old company that makes chains. nothing else. big chains, small chains, chains that lift elevators, timing chains for expensive cars, just chains. german steel, swedish stainless, just for chains.

as for the expense, i haven’t found them expensive at all. i almost always just buy the nickel chains, and i find them priced quite reasonably.

answered a bit in another post on this tread. yes, i’ll talk about this in the 2005 bike spec article.
