Britain dominant at track cycling worlds

Who can stop them in Beijing?

Team GB have done a cracking job at the Worlds this year netting 9 Golds so far with the second place team on 2! It’s a testiment to the staff that have been placed in the set up that they have garnered riders in from other sports such as rowing for the ladies team sprint, a tactic reminesent (sp.) of the Aussie set up. All this has been lottery funded which is even more incredible.

Great to see Scot, Chris Hoy cleaning up in the sprint since his former event of the kilo had been dropped by the IOC. Victoria Pendleton also winning 2 golds along with Wiggins and Cavendish taking the Madisen, despite being so closely marked was a superb Saturday of sport.

Bring on Beijing!

Still todays racing to go. A third title for Vicky in the keirin perhaps?

Big congrats to Chris Hoy. First man to win all four sprint titles I believe…

I mirror Julian’s comments. This programme was created to succeed, and it is amazing how you can create success, simply by providing the resources. My favorite statistic about the Lottery funding, was that the BCF couldn’t spend all of the money they were assigned. Britain has also invested a ton in swimming - expect some good performances in Beijing also, but not to the same extent as on the track.

Finally, this somewhat neutralizes the US system in which athletes have the best facilities and set-up for success in sport. Australia developed their athletic development system to compete with the US years ago, and look at their results in multiple sports.

Give the US some credit. In athletics, swimming, and such they will be good as usual.
As far as the cycling, Hammer and Reed are good tips for medalling in the pursuit and sprint, while Dave Z will have a decent crack at the TT.

Oh…I give the US credit, they may win the medal count (don’t discount the Chinese machine), what I meant to say is that the US has a system in place to develop athletes of all kinds, in many sports. The system is funded so that athletes can develop to potential without the worry of money (food, coaching, equipment etc). As an GB Olympic Team member twenty years ago, I could not survive in the UK? I had to take advantage of the US system…!

Interesting, what sport did you compete in?

Swimming…

Awesome! It’s a shame though that you couldn’t find the support you needed in the UK. These days it seems like there are great support structures in place for some sports like track cycling and rowing, but not for a lot of others.

Track Worlds have been great this year. Have been watching the competition on WCSN. Looking forward to tonight’s action. An interesting observation is that I’ve only seen 1 rider using Zipp wheels and only 3 riders on the P3C track bike. Mavic Comte wheels have been on 90% of the bikes and the Look track bike has been, by far, the most prevalent bike.

Ric

Eat it people. Eat it.

On another note, I noticed that the Cervelo’s use has definetly upsurged since last years champs. Before most riders used the BT or the Look. Wheel use is pretty much identical but it’s worth noting that tub brand wasn’t…

i tell you what, my friends from the UK, i am converted…its now my fave sport to watch on TV (after football of course…watching Man U on TV etc since i was about 5)…apart from the brutally efficient Chris Hoy and the smooth, perfect form Bradley Wiggins etc etc i really enjoyed the guy from Belarus winning that race where he shot off the front at the start then was caught by the pack then he shot off again to win…that was great…

I dont really know many of the rules of stuff like Madison? etc but im looking into it as we speak in order to enjoy indoor cycling on Eurosport more…

Most people from Gibraltar support team GB at the Olympics so im looking forward to 9 or more gold medals…

It was a truly superb spectacle and I think the coverage from Eurosport and BBC was excellent (for a change). You are so right about the Belarussian, it spectacles like that which add to the mix, who can forget the rider from HK being allowed to go out on his own (I think in Mallorca) and winning against all expectations?

Hoy was magnificent but then you ruined by mentioning Man U

Catch you later, Steve.

Yeah, there is not much British about Man U these days…except Rooney and the ex-West Ham players…?

You must not have seen the team pursuit - the Danish squad (which finished 2nd) used P3C track bikes.

As for the lack of Zipp wheels, in addition to providing product Mavic pays the Australian federation $60k/y to use their stuff…hard to compete with that level of investment.

the eurosport coverage of the madison was awesome. i had never seen a madison before, and that was amazing. it was so cool to see the brits fight so hard to get the lap back. unbelievable effort on the part of wiggins. cav will be fine as he refines his skills. i would have liked to see the us do a little better, but oh well. that was probably the most thrilling 55 minutes of cycling racing i have ever seen. way better than crits.

i know man…that why i keep on mentioning Man U…thats funny man…the above poster is English not British…LOL
.

Yeah he’s strict about that ! The downside is that at the Commonwealth games we lose Hoy and half the squad to the scottish team

The race for me was defiently the madison as it was easier to follow than usual and Cavendish and Wiggins were so heavily marked (to the extent that some teams were racing against them as opposed to trying to win themselves) that it was quite an achievement.

Yeh i agree…it was good when he broke off to chase down a lap…Wiggins wasnt it…it was funny…the wife walks in and says…“why are they holding hands…?” and I say…“'cos its a new rule to promote love between team mates…” it was funnier in Spanish liek i said it…actually…is there a web site i can read about all the disciplines and the rules etc…but like easy to understand…or even if you guys are bored as el Chris Moyles is not on radio one this morning perhaps you can write a few lines for me…a link will do though boys

By the way…Im Gibraltarian not Spanish, not English…but we’re British by definition although the truth is we’re Gibraltarian and that’s it…
