Glad to have had the opportunity to see him perform a few years ago. While it was obvious then that he was a shell of his former self, it was still one of the most enjoyable shows I’ve ever been to.
“I wanted to write joyful music that would make other people feel good.”
That he did.
The one song we all hated in high school, but god help us when it came on the radio we’d all sing it loud and proud, Kokomo.
Thanks for the memories, RIP.
Brian Wilson was not recording or performing with The Beach Boys when that monstrosity came out.
Like Sly Stone, RIP to musical genius who had some serious mental illness issues.
RIP
No shit? I learned something new today. Only took 37 years for me to learn that.
When Paul McCartney says you wrote the greatest song ever written…enough said.
Good Vibrations is the greatest song of the last 150 years.
Wilson built the most expensive song made for a long time over many studio sessions. He’d record things, break them apart, put them back together, move things around. Ground breaking stuff in 66
What a messed up life that guy had. Hopefully he found some peace.
53 years ago for 3 weeks that summer at the dirty shirt O club at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Sloop John B became our (PSU NROTC class '74) song. Just last year at our 50th year (and only year) reunion, one of us started in with a soft voiced " We come on" and without missing a beat all joined for an encore performance. A special evening made even more special, Thanks Brian. RIP.
Back in the early 1980’s (or so) you could attend the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto around labour day and you would get a package deal. Entry to the CNE, a Blue Jays game and a couple of times the Beach Boys in concert. You had to pay for one and got all three if the timing worked out.
Provided good parody material. This was played extensively during deployment to Kosovo.
The Paul Dano / Johsn Cusack movie was good as well.
My choice - and Rick Beato agrees
If you should ever leave me
Well life would still go on believe me
The world could show nothing to me
So what good would living do me
Kinda has that crazy ex “I’ll kill myself if we break up” but it just SO beautifully done, you dismiss it
According to the folks from the Wrecking Crew, he was a genius, and even at his young age had their respect; for the creation of Pet Sounds. That says alot to me.
God Only Knows is the best Beach Boys song and I will fight anyone who says differently.
Followed by Wouldn’t It Be Nice and Good Vibrations.
Never listened to any of his or their music. Read his obituary today and it was talking about how Pet Sounds was the Best or Second Best album ever so figured I should listen to it. So I listened to the entire album, Thoroughly enjoyed it.
The only concert I ever worked security at was a Beach Boys concert. It was the 1985 National Boy Scout Jamboree. It was a great show.
In the 79s, Sunkist used Good Vibrations in their commercials. Those two will be forever linked for me.
The first time I saw The Beach Boys was on the Ben Franklin Parkway July 4 1985, after they got kicked out of DC in 1983
Supporting acts included Robert Hazard, and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts
For some reason, the Parks Department thought it was a good idea to put out thousands of wooden folding chairs; not like anyone set them on fire, or beat each other with them — we just walked off with them
I held onto a pair for almost 20 years before they came apart and I let them go
The other time was at LiveAid, a few days later— they did not come through my grill/sandwich line
