Brand Loyalty? What road bike do you ride?

I was advised to get a road bike for my training, as opposed to riding around my pretty P2c for everything. I would love if someone can chime in the benefits of having a road bike, but my primary question is:

  1. What do you ride Tri / TT?
  2. What do you ride Road?
  3. Was that decision influenced on brand loyalty?
  4. Where is your greatest investment (pertaining to your bike)?

As a Cervelo owner with fantastic fit, I naturally starting looking at Soloists as a lower priced bike for me. However, there are some awesome mid range to low range road bikes new (Scott S20, Pinarello F2, Felt F5, etc) and used you can find some awesome bikes! I found a nice Bianchi San Lorenzo for cheap as well.

Cheers

  1. What do you ride Tri / TT? Cervelo P2K (bought in 2000)
  2. What do you ride Road? Cervelo Prodigy (bought in 2003)
  3. Was that decision influenced on brand loyalty? Partly, but more on the shop owner’s recommendation (Steve Larsen)
  4. Where is your greatest investment? Not sure what you mean. Which bike has the most money in it? The tri bike for sure since I have a disk wheel, it’s been repainted, has new aerobars and new wheels.

I also have a Redline Conquest Pro cross bike, but would take one of the few Cervelo cross bikes. I also have a Felt 2TK track bike. Loving the Felt for sure.

I rode a Guru carbon road bike today tricked out with Dura Ace and Reynolds wheels. It was SWEET! When I come into a bunch of money, I may just get one.

  1. What do you ride Tri / TT? Kestrel Talon SL
  2. What do you ride Road? Kestrel Talon SL
  3. Was that decision influenced on brand loyalty? versatility, reputation
  4. Where is your greatest investment? real estate
  1. What do you ride Tri / TT? QR Lucero for tris and TT, Cervelo Dual for training and bike tours
  2. What do you ride Road? Cervelo Soloist for Germany 70.3 and soon road races
  3. Was that decision influenced on brand loyalty? No
  4. Where is your greatest investment? Time
  1. What do you ride Tri / TT? Zipp 2001

  2. What do you ride Road? Trek 5200 (Trek 8000 and Trek Y-11 for off road)

  3. Was that decision influenced on brand loyalty? Zipp was influenced ever since I saw the first one in 1992 - its my dream bike. The Trek was influenced by “fit”. I researched bikes for nearly 12 months before I decided to buy my first Trek in 1993, I’ve owned about 10 of them since. NEVER had a problem with any of them.

  4. Where is your greatest investment? Wheels are the most expensive parts/bikes I own. My Zipp Frames (x2) I got on a GREAT deal for just the frames, brand new. And the other bikes I’ve never spent more then $1300 for complete bikes.

  1. What do you ride Tri / TT? Cervelo P2C
  2. What do you ride Road? Felt F50
  3. Was that decision influenced on brand loyalty? Sure, both Felt and Cervelo make awesome bikes.
  4. Where is your greatest investment? I’m living in it.
  1. What do you ride Tri / TT? Guru Cronalu … awesome, under-rated frame. No BS, just a solid frame. Probably not terribly aero, but it’s fast enough for me.
  2. What do you ride Road? Merckx Team Sc … one of the best road racing frames of the last several years. Very euro. No flash and no BS, just fast. Not light; but, not heavy. Eddy approved geo. made in Belgium. This frame is a keeper.
  3. Was that decision influenced on brand loyalty? I don’t have brand loyalty. I am loyal to good design and fabrication. The sticker isn’t really relevant.
  4. Where is your greatest investment? Road bike. I ride it the most. Probably 3:1.

Cervelo really does have great design and engineering. I’m not thrilled with the fact their bikes are made in China, but this is more of a personal anti-China sentiment that I have than commentary on the build quality. All of the Cervelos I have seen have been well made … not boutique level, but so what … fancy lugs and paint don’t make you fast (although fancy lugs and paint certainly have their place).

  1. What do you ride Tri / TT? - PlanetX, Softride, Cervelo
  2. What do you ride Road? Litespeed Ultimate (Custom)
  3. Was that decision influenced on brand loyalty? no
  4. Where is your greatest investment? Campagnolo

  1. P2C
  2. Soloist Carbon
  3. Only because I thought that Cervelo was the top bike that I tried - started out in endurance sports as a Roadie in the mid-80s
  4. About equal because I bought the Soloist used

Regarding the benefits of a road bike: http://www.finalkicksports.com/articles/A%20Road%20Bike_but%20I’m%20a%20Triathlete.doc - a bit of local emphasis, but salient points apply.

  1. What do you ride Tri / TT? 2006 Cervelo P2C
  2. What do you ride Road? 2005 Fuji Team Pro
  3. Was that decision influenced on brand loyalty? My LBS, Locomotion in Winter Park have Jack and Jerry and Mike, and the other shops don’t, that is why I but the Cervelo there. My Fuji was simply an incredible deal and my first Tri bike was a 1998 Aloha (which I miss terribly)
  4. Where is your greatest investment? They are all sleeping: Wife Donna, daughter Nichole, twin sons Shane (Ghengis) and Kyle (Attila) of course they are doing so in a house that aint too shabby.
  5. What is your favorite bike? My ancient Huffy Ironman Team Pro Mountain Bike made of Titanium Boron Steel!!! Got this baby back when the M Dot logo wasnt worth squat and they were slapping their name on anything to stay a float. I could give a crap about the M Dot logo but Huffy built one helluva bike. It weighs a ton but and I have beaten the crap out of it but I have won many a fat tire races with this beast and jumped a gazillion curbs ditches and stairs. I will never ever part with that bike!

  1. Giant Trinity-full carbon
    2.Moots Vamoots-SL and Compact SL
    3.yes
4.more invested in the road bikes
  1. What do you ride Tri / TT? 2004 Cervelo P3
  2. What do you ride Road? 2006 Cervelo R3
  3. Was that decision influenced on brand loyalty? Yes, but really brand addicted. The P3 brought me there, but the R3 was really sexy. I loved the Pro Tour affiliation and seeing my bike win races. The R3 got a lot of attention at road races as well.
  4. Where is your greatest investment? Both are about even given the difference in date of purchase and that I have HED disc rear and Alps front on the P3. I might add that I bought the P3 at Nytro when living in CA ( passed on the T3 from Aegis at the time as I was replacing a stolen Aegis Trident ) and bought the R3 from Sherman at Bike Authority in Ohio.

I am done buying bikes for a while! I think I will be doing Tri’s on the P3 when I am 60 and look so “Old School”…41 now.

As to the benefits of having a road bike, I would say that it is more comfortable to ride than the tri bike but primarily would be the acceptance and safety of group riding.

I was advised to get a road bike for my training, as opposed to riding around my pretty P2c for everything. I would love if someone can chime in the benefits of having a road bike, but my primary question is:

  1. What do you ride Tri / TT? 2001 QR TiPhoon
  2. What do you ride Road? 2007 Litespeed Archon T1 (was a Ghisallo)
  3. Was that decision influenced on brand loyalty? Not really Brand loyalty, although Litespeed makes really, really nice bikes and is a great company. I think that I’d trade in my QR for a Saber at the drop of a hat. I’m material loyal and am heavily biased towards Titanium.
  4. Where is your greatest investment? Some sparklely rocks that now reside on my wife’s left hand.

As a Cervelo owner with fantastic fit, I naturally starting looking at Soloists as a lower priced bike for me. 1. What do you ride Tri / TT? - Cervelo P2C
  2. What do you ride Road? Felt F2, Van Dessel Campitello (early season and PowerCranks)
  3. Was that decision influenced on brand loyalty? No, I went from Trek to Litespeed to Cervelo on the tri bike side and from an old Fiori to Van Dessel to F2 on the Road Bike side. I only bought the road bikes for our local cycle club group rides and road races. That being said, the Cervelo and Felt are sweet riding bikes.
  4. Where is your greatest investment? All of it including race wheels and disc
  1. What do you ride Tri / TT? Orbea Ora (purchased May 2007)
  2. What do you ride Road? Currently 2005 Giant TCR Limited

  4. Where is your greatest investment? **Soon to be Specialized Tarmac S-Works SL2 Frame. Going to build up a new road bike. **
  1. What do you ride Tri / TT? 2001 Litespeed Blade

  2. What do you ride Road? 2004 Colnago Dream Tri that I just built up, wanted a road bike with 650 wheels and actually prefer the steeper seat angle as well. My other road bike is a 2001 Litespeed Ultimate

(other) What do you ride Mtn? 1997 Litespeed Tellico, this bike is the reason I chose Litespeeds for the next two purchases

  1. Was that decision influenced on brand loyalty? Yes, I was very happy with the mtb, can’t see myself riding carbon and wasn’t a big fan of aluminum at the time so my choices were limited in the first place.

  2. Where is your greatest investment? Umm, as stated above…I own a lot of titanium.

  1. Cervelo P3C

  3. Was that decision influenced on brand loyalty? yes, somewhat. Also some LBS factors involved also.
  4. Where is your greatest investment? I’m living in it also ;-), but as far as biking is concerned, my new ride in it’s final state will represent the greatest/largest so far.
  1. Cervelo P3C
