I am trying to put new Campy brake calipers on a Look 496 frame which is very thick at the fork and rear triangle. The screws and nuts aren’t long enough to reach each other on the calipers. I know that Campy sales nuts in 3 different sizes for different thicknesses of frames but I don’t believe the largest one will even work. Any suggestions or has anybody ran into this problem?
Given that this may void the warranty on your frame, and WILL on your brakes, proceed delicately!
If you can remove the stud from the brakes (if it threads into the brakes, you can twist on one bolt, then a second one… tighten the two bolts together and undo the stud from the brake by loosening the bottom one) I have never tried this, so I have no idea if it would work.
At this point, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find a piece of threaded rod that will fit. The big downside would be that Campy probably uses some fancy metal instead of ordinary Stainless, which would be quite heavy.
What brakes do the Looks come with to begin with? I would seriously consider dumping the Campy and getting whatever those are.
I looked at the rear of the 496, and seriously, it doesn’t look to be any thicker than other carbon frames. with the nut fully inserted, does it fit flush with the frame?
interesting, I googled some pictures and it looks like all the 496’s have a spacer between the brake and frame. I wonder if there is special hardware required to mount a caliper.
----edit ----
nah, looks normal
is there some carbon flash leftover in the hole, blocking it? Did you get it from a LBS?
I remembered something else… I’ve seen nuts to fit on the end of the brake stud that have a long tube with threading at the end. Maybe you can find a longer one? Hope the illustration below helps
The long campy nut is 24mm, and I would have a hard time believing that it would be too short for your frame. (the short one which comes with the brakes is 13.5mm and the middle sized is 18.5mm). Maybe there is some residual paint/carbon or some other debris in the holes that needs to be reamed out a little bit.
got a chance to go by bike shop. it took an extra long, longer than 24mm, to work. very thick fork and rear triangle on the frame. thanks for the help. can’t wait to get it built up. will post pics as soon as it ready.
