Hi! Any recommendations for good rides in Bozeman? Good shops? Biking groups I should know about? Thanks!
All I know about Bozeman is that it’s home to Carl Strong. Wouldn’t be surprised if he could give you some good routes.
Skip the riding and spend some time fly fishing. I go to Bozeman every few years and there is no way that I could ride out there. Too many trout to pass by.
swimgal, go see Tony or anyone @ FleetFeet on main st. They can tell you where to go, I think it’s Bangtail where I saw the most roadie activity, it’s mainly a mtn. bike scene out there. Their is a pretty fast roadie ride they do midweek. Like dude said, the trout fishing is hot, and you have got to hike up Sacajewa peak just outside of town in the bridger range, it’s a short hike and the view is awesome!
I’ve been lucky enough to call Bozeman home for a couple years back in my college days (4-5 years ago). I still dream about moving back there from Boston except for the lack of a racing scene and enormous distance from any major city. I may move there for a couple months this summer though (I have the summer off as a teacher). Unfortunately when I lived there I wasn’t into cycling, but I can still recall some stuff… I don’t recall any great bike shop dedicated to road riding. Like the previous poster said, the scene is mostly mountain biking. For a serious workout, you could try cycling up Hyalite Canyon all the way to Hyalite Reservoir. It’s about 5 miles outside of town, has beautiful scenery, and is a steep climb of about 10 miles long. You could also try riding to the town of Norris on Route 84 which leaves Bozeman. It’s about 20 miles to Norris which will bring you to the Madison river and Beartrap Canyon which are really nice. I’d say one of the dissapointing things about Bozeman area cycling is it’s pretty difficult to find a cycling loop (since there are few interconnecting roads). Almost all of your rides are going to be out-and-back rides which is ok, but not my favorite. If I were you and visiting Bozeman for a week or so, I would recommend spending a lot of your time with the amazing hiking and fishing in the area instead of only cycling. If you want any good ideas for hiking or fishing, PM me. I’ve been to almost everywhere within 50 miles of Bozeman and could recommend some great places. Have fun!
Hvae you hiked the bridger ridge run. Probably the toughest run I ever did. My quads were shot with two swollen ankles.
Holy crap that run is hard core! I haven’t hiked the whole distance of the Bridger ridge, but I did go up to Mt. Baldy a bunch of times and one trip did about 7 miles along the ridge. I always wanted to hike all the way along the ridge to Sacajawea but never was able to put that together.
I am sure there is no shortage of great riding there. Just about everyone I talk to who has been, has raved about Bozeman. Also, it routinley seems to make it into Outside magazine’s top 10 cool places to live in the U.S.

I want to do it again. I live in Billings. I am doing Vineman this, so maybe next year. The whole Lewis and Clark series of runs is great. The problem with theridge run,it basiclly ends your season to recover…Cheers. Ken
