I tried to search but couldn’t find too much information on these wheels. Any have them? If so what do you think of them. They seem like a good deal, similar to the Flo wheels coming out soon. Just wondering if anyone had any wind tunnel data for the Boyd wheels or any reviews.
No personal experience, but Boyd is local to my area and I know a lot of folks who have the wheels and ride/race them. I haven’t heard any complaints. To the contrary. Haven’t seen any data, either.
Reviews are like planet X wheels. Inexpensive builds quality service. I like that they use Sapim cxray spokes in their builds
The 88mm tubulars for $850 seems hard to beat, so as long as they are almost as aero as zipps or heds that might be where my money is going…
Have two sets both clincher, 50s and a mixed set of 60/88. Mine are from his early release and are different from what he currently offers. Loved them at first but lost almost all the luster when I went through two broken spokes and one rear wheel that developed loose spokes due to cracked nipples in under 200 miles. Am still using them since I have already paid for them but I was not too happy with the customer service overall and to do it again would look elsewhere considering current pricing and what else is out there.
I was very happy with a set of 38mm. Light and Smooth.
I’m guessing they don’t have wind tunnel data, so has anyone ridden Boyd wheels and some of the bigger names and can you chime in about which “felt” faster and stiffness? And if you tested them on a course and then tested with different wheels if you have the times of those that would be good info, although I know conditions can change the data drastically. But if I at least believe they are fast I will want to buy them =)
Anyone else have any information on them?
I don’t have any information on Boyd’s but if you’re looking for an inexpensive aero wheelset to build up, I wouldn’t rule out generic Chinese carbon. This has been discussed *ad nauseum *in other threads, but I figured I’d throw it out there. I built up a set of 88 mm tubies last year, partly because I had a friend who was going to teach me wheelbuilding, partly because I wanted to lace something cool to an older 32-hole wired PT, and partly as an experiement, but I have absolutely hammered them in training and racing for >1500 mi with zero problems whatsoever. I don’t have any tunnel data, but they can’t be that slow. I rode a sub-2:20 bike split in the last 70.3 I raced on them.
Just ordered the 88mm tubulars from boyd, can’t wait to get them in! I will let you guys know what I think of them.
They are the open mold chinese wheels. Which is fine. Seems like a good price for the build. You can pick a similar wheelset up on ebay (carbonmolds) for under $500. Hubs will be a poorer quality.
anyone can compare the boyd wheels with the more established brands like mavic, reynolds, zipp, etc?

you need to ask yourself if paying extra 1-2K is worth to you 1 or 2 seconds savings? if not, get boyd and with the money you saved get proper tubes and tires.
i have 58/85 combo. excellent product and even better customer service

I’d wait on FLO cycling. If you really want a set of Boyds, get a set of rims off of Ebay for 250-300 then take them to your LBS and have them build them up for you.

Thank you for keeping us in mind. We appreciate it!
The Boyd wheels are just sticker branded wheels from China but I have a pair of 88mm clinchers and love them for the value. No problems.
The rims are Taiwanese, actually. Quite a bit different (lighter, better brake track) than the Chinese ones off eBay. Same rims as Williams, November, etc.
actually the carbone sl’s from CRC is very cheap.
Its even cheaper than the boyd wheels!
But it only has a rim depth of 52mm compared to options like 5mm8 or 80mm
It’s not so much the aero savings but the quality, customer service, and workmanship that you get from other brands. The mavics, zipps etc. would easily last you 5-10 years with almost no problems. I don’t think you could say the same about Boyd. Although he’s a nice guy, you get what you pay for with his wheels.

do you have a personal experience with boyd wheels?
