Boyd Wheels (4)

About a year ago I researched carbon wheels and heard good things about Boyd. Half the price of the top, high end brands but the same or almost the same quality (depending on who you talk to, of course!). I also heard they had great customer service and stood behind their product.

I went with the carbon clincher 44s. My first after market wheel purchase ever. Put them on a fairly new S-Works Roubaix.

This first set rode really well. Strong but not too stiff, incredibly light. Great at speeds. I could feel a difference even when drafting. Great wheel set for sure, especially for the price. This wheel is worthy even at a higher price point.

But under hard braking less than 500 miles or 10 rides in, they warped a bit and were no longer good. Unsafe in fact. I contacted Boyd and they said their 2015 rims did have a small percentage that experienced this issue and that they would replace them. That was incredibly honest and straight forward, and I immediately appreciated the excellent customer service that Boyd showed by replacing them without any hassle.

I received a personal call from Nicole as soon as she returned from a European product trip w/Boyd and she took care of me like no other. She asked if I could wait a couple of months because although they had some new 2016 models in already, they did not yet have the extra spoke count in stock (I am 6’ 4" and was 220-225 lbs when the first set was built (I’m down to 205 now after my century!) so I went with the extra spoke count option in the rear to cover riders up to 250). I mentioned I was training for my first century and what a bummer to not have the carbons, and she jumped pretty high and shipped me a set of Boyd alloy wheels at no cost!! She also said I could keep them after I received the new 2016 Boyd carbons! Wow. Even further, they called me before my century and offered to priority ship the new wheels so I could ride the race with them, but I was ok using their alloys for the century (the Boyd alloys are a pretty nice wheel set too!) and didn’t want them to incur more expense to rush the build and shipping of my new wheel set. They had already done plenty and I wanted my wheels to be built right.

So…the new 2016 Boyd carbon clincher 44s I am now riding are just amazing. I’m almost a 1,000 miles in. Some heavy climbing and some fast downs at 50 mph. NO braking issues whatsoever. Incredibly strong and stiff, yet stiff without feeling stiff. Stiff in a good way, building confidence in the set. They are also very light, and very aerodynamic; I can still feel the negative rolling resistance at speeds. Especially when drafting. These wheels are an excellent investment and worthy addition to any bike.

Funny, when the first wheel set was shipped they came with Campy pads and not the Shimano I needed. So I had to buy pads at my local bike shop. Even that first interaction with Boyd showed off their excellent customer service, They sent me the correct pads…and a nice Boyd rim bag for free. At the time I thought it was a nice gesture but figured I wouldn’t benefit from it because I keep my carbons on all the time. Now I used the wheel bag for the brand new alloy loaners that Boyd provided and let me keep! Nice.

Thank you Boyd. And Nicole. Thank you for an excellent set of carbons and a truly A+ focus on customer service. Unparalleled in my 45 years on the planet. Plus now I am achieving new PRs and busting segments like no other!!

+1 I bought a set of 2012 Boyd wheels… not one problem… and have bought pads new skewers and 11 speed hub upgrade…
Boyd himself answered my emails… the Canadian dollar is taking a shit kicking or i would order a set of wheels for my new disc brake bike.

Jeff

I’ve known Boyd and Nicole long before they started the business. I still use 4 sets of Boyd wheels from the initial phase of the business. Boyd and Nicole are both people who are compassionate and understand what it takes to build a successful business.

Great report. I think that with customer support like that, Boyd is gonna have a long and bright future.

Boyd and Nicole are class acts. They’ve put a lot into their wheels. They’re not just Chinese open-mold stuff that anyone can slap a decal on. These are their own heavily researched and tested designs. I’ve had some Boyd wheels for a few years and after years of buying the other major brands at substantially more expense, I’ll now buy Boyd before I’ll buy anything else. I have a new set on order with his new Eternity Hub design which I’m really anxious to see.

Boyd is the real deal.

Good start to slowtwitch, first post and you simply sound like a marketing campaign for a company. Call me cynical, but in my opinion, this thread smells.

Hey there, I am Boyd and yes, this is a customer of ours and not a marketing shill. We did have an issue with his wheels, which I am sorry happened. I am happy that we were able to get him up and running again, and that he was happy enough to make this post. I can assure you that we aren’t making fake profiles for a marketing campaign.

Right…

You would have done better by not answering in this thread, especially not in that manner and timeliness.

Again, in my opinion.

Sorry . . of course if there’s a thread about our wheels I am going to be monitoring it. And I happened to be on when the post came through. So a quick reply was just that. . .a quick reply because I happened to be on the site at the time.

Of course, that makes perfect sense and explains everything.

Dude…chill. Boyd Cycling has been around a long time. People know who they are and they have a great reputation.

Cynical much? Did you happen to notice the three people who followed the OP with the same opinion? Let me guess, they’re all in the same room. …probably even using the same computer.

Boyd,

Don’t fall for the ST trap! Move on from the thread and keep on building fantastic wheels!

And no, I don’t work for the company and don’t even ride his wheels, just know his product and his business.

I realize this is not important, but how do the 44s sound? Yes, I know… but I like what I like.

You are coming across as a huge tool, making fairly serious accusations without a shred of evidence to back them up.

If I were looking to do some marketing (left-handed) for my company, I wouldn’t start it with a defective product.

Tool, yes, maybe, but I am free to voice my thoughts on a forum. I do not believe I need evidence to offer an opinion, at least not where I live. You are of course free to make an assumption about what I am saying.

Yes, very cynical. I made no mention of any ties between those and the OP.

Some stories are better than others and it usually the end of them that is the clincher.

You are absolutely right, and I am free to comment on your posting as well.
