Bourbon for beginners

I am looking for a smooth, reasonably priced Bourbon.

I don’t want it to punch me in the throat and I don’t want it to be $50 or more.

Go.

Oh nice thread.

Makers Mark is a solid bottle to have that meets your criteria. Knob Creek also.

Sipping or mixing?

Sipping.

Looking for something to sip, something to mix, something to drink neat or on ice?

Four Roses. My younger daughter (18) calls it “Babies’ Bourbon”.

ETA: I think Knob Creek is quite punchy for an intro to sipping. You might find it has more throat burn than you want.
It’s probably >$50 but Woodford Reserve Double Oaked (not regular WR - make sure you get the Double Oaked) is great for sipping. Like alcoholic burnt caramel.

Sipping. Probably neat since we rarely have ice.

Basil Hayden is good

You might be right re the KC. Been a bit since Ive opened that one. Mea culpa, Blep.

Edit for mixup

For sipping, you’ll definitely hear Four Roses and probably Evan Williams. You might also try Mitcher’s US*1. Buffalo Trace might be a good option as well.

If you want to go up a bit, Blantons is a great option at about the $70 price tag.

No ice up north, eh?

If you can find Blantons for $70 now thats incredible. So unnecessarily pricey around us.

Yeah we have a distinct lack of ice here.

Mostly the issue is that we don’t have a secondary freezer. Just the one with the fridge. So it’s usually full.

You’d have to find it on sale. The BevMo by me is advertising it at $69.99.

I always send newbie to Basil Hayden. Good price. Very light and clean. It’s a nice sipping bourbon. I will still have a pour every now and then. It is one of the mildest bourbons out there that still gives you a full flavor.

I would start with having some on ice. Not too much ice. Let it melt just a little. Sip. From there, go neat with just a splash of water.

I hear ya on the second freezer. I need to grab one.

I do second the suggestion on some ice. Grab a nice larger ice mold and enjoy. They always open up to me more after a few sips. Love the bourbon train.

Cheers man

Mix it 1/3 booze and 2/3rd coke, hopefully it still won’t taste like shit.
