Just moved to the area and wanted to get the local 411 on the local pools in the area. In Wakefield area for a few months so anything in that area would work.
have some family in that area. i know one relative belongs to the burbank ymca in reading…maybe check that out? FWIW, that particular Y used to sponsor a tri in wakefield every summer, but i’m not sure that still happens.
Will check it out. I actually think I did that tri years ago while visiting my mother in law in the area.
Swimmersguide.com to find a pool anywhere in the world. I travel for work a tun, I look for a pool, then a hotel nearby.
Yeah I use that and Swim Radar app, which is great. Sometimes I like to get insider info though from locals, as I’ve chosen pools off those sources and they’ve been pretty crappy.
X2 on Burbank Y in Reading, great pool and they have a Masters program also. I live nearby and used to swim there quite a bit.
To the OP, definitely make use of the loop around the lake in Wakefield, it’s a perfect 5k around and great for getting a run in. They also have a Wednesday night 5k series if you are looking for a race while in the area. Not sure if you have a bike with you but plenty of good riding routes in the area as well, especially if you head north through Reading, North Reading or Lynnfield.
hah - that was actually the first tri i ever did. except they had to call it off for thunderstorms before i even got on the bike. i guess the first five minutes were enough to get me hooked on the sport, though…
and i’ll second brian’s comment about rides. i spent last summer in andover, and you can find some decent routes out toward boxford/topsfield, although it’s a little more crowded down around wakefield. if you want a longer ride, you can string together some good roads all the way out to rockport, which is a nice weekend adventure. i did it more or less as andover → east boxford → topsfield → ipswich → essex → gloucester → rockport.
Sweet, thanks for that. Yeah I’ve ridden a few times north already, we’re actually moving to the Boxford/Topsfield/Georgetown area (we think). Did a nice 70 mile loop yesterday through most of those towns.
I’ve run around that lake a few times also. It’s about 2 miles from where we are staying (good warm up) then I’ll do some speed work around the lake because it’s pancake flat, then cool off on the way back home.
I will definitely go to Burbank tomorrow. Hopefully they have month to month memberships as I’m not sure how long we’ll be here.
check out the www.trifury.com group rides leaving out of andover (herman youth center) every sat morning.
good groups. 35 and 53 mile rides. often times folks double the 53 or do the 53 then 35. anywhere from 6 rides to 35 riders.

I live in Woburn, and there are quite a few options around. I swim at the Boston Sports Club in Lexington, but there is also one in Woburn right off of 93. There are a lot of people that I know swim at the MIT Zesiger Fitness Center Watertown (77 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA).
Is the parking at MIT a bitch? I swam there years ago but it was a one off swim so curious if the logistics of getting in and out would be challenging. Nice pool though! BSC is an option as I could just take the membership with me but I think the Lynnfield location is the furthest north for after I move, and I don’t think they do month to month.

I’m not sure how the parking is. I only swim there during the multi-sport expo they have at MIT in the spring, and there is always plenty of parking there because they get the whole parking garage across the street and a bunch of nearby parking lots just for the event.
I think it would depend on when you wanted to swim there? E3 Training Solutions does a winter/spring program there on Thursdays from 7:00-8:30. At that time, I think that parking in the garage would be fairly open. http://e3ts.com/services/swim-programs/
Any good open water swimming in your area?
