Just a reminder, if you have a BQ time…
Curious the wisdom of this crowd: what do you guess the “cut-off” times this year will be, if any?
While no cutoff in 2022… guessing more people ran races this year? More demand?

I’m 2:44 under the cut-off for my age. Hoping it turns out to be enough. Looking back it would get in 10 of the past 13 races. They made the BQ times 5 minutes faster across the board starting in 2020 which should mean the cutoff time isn’t too far under the BQ time . 2021 of course was a lot harder to get in due to the field being 2/3 the normal size.
I’m with you in thinking that more races have returned so there might be more people registering. Purely an uneducated guess, but I’m thinking it might be in the 1-1:30 range?
Also, does anyone know how long after the registration window closes it takes to hear if you got in? I imagine it is takes a little bit to verify the a of thousands of times.
1:54
I am 5:26 under. So just hope it’s under 5:25
I BQ’d Saturday at the Last Chance BQ.2 Chicagoland marathon. I’ve only a 2:30 cushion. Hope it’s enough. Do they ever go to the second or do they always round up to the minute?
Well if I look at the table above, it was never rounded. Also, how would you get a precise number of athletes (30,000) if you were to round?
I missed reading that table or I read it without comprehending it. I’ll blame that on miles 25 and 26 from Saturday. I may have traded some brain cells for a BQ
I went 17 minutes under my qualifying time so I am not too worried about getting in. This was my first time racing a Marathon in 12 years and my first time to get a BQ. I know that the cut-off was about 5 minutes when some of my friends were getting in to Boston before Covid. I know that the cut off was zero last year but if I am not mistaken a lot of the BQ times were recently dropped 5 minutes, so I am guessing that the cut off will be close to zero again.
Note: I wanted to go to Ibiza for Multisports Worlds in place of Boston but the event I qualified for was scheduled on Sunday so I can’t do that race now. Mabey I can get qualified in another event for Ibiza. In the mean time I will get my Boston Application in.
Edited
I saw the chart in this thread after replying. It shows that the field size for the 2022 was 30,000 but the race results show that there were only 24,918 finishers in 2022 so there were really only about 26,000 applications last year. I am sure that has a lot to due with the 2021 race being in October giving just half a year between races rather that a full year. I am still guessing that the cut off will be close to zero.
Guessing we’ll see something back in the 2:00-3:00 range. Debating on registering or doing an early season 70.3/140.6.

Everyone who ran a BQ time is in for the second strait year. Seems like the 5 minute drop they did across the board on qualification times did the trick
A total of 23,267 applications were submitted over the five-day registration window, an increase from the 22,936 qualified applications received last year. The field of 2023 qualifiers is made up of 13,315 men, 9,930 women, and 22 non-binary athletes. 624 athletes who have finished at least 10 consecutive Boston Marathons had already been accepted into the field.

Or people still don’t want to travel for various reasons (covid, fucked up airlines, recession, etc…)…
Honest question. What qualifying time is required for non-binary people? Skimming the BAA website I couldn’t find anything.

From this article, they will use women’s qualifying times, but not eligible for awards…

Thanks, I was curious about that as well
I’m in for 2023!!! And, as a bonus, I was told the time I ran at BQ.2 will be good for applying for 2024 as well

So what’s stopping me from living my life 100% as a man absolutely zero difference, EXCEPT when I ran my qualifying race I checked the ‘non-binary’ box. People cheat to get BQ’s all the time. Someone struggling to BQ isn’t winning money. All this does is allow slower men to qualify.

I am betting that played a roll as well. It would be interesting to see how many non-North Americans applied this year vs past years - I am guessing that is a group which is more hesitant to enter since costs and airline travel is magnified.
For my family of 4 I am guessing we’ll be dropping a pretty penny when it’s all said and done. But my wife has always wanted to visit Boston and we have friends in Connecticut so it’ll be a combo race/vacation for us. It’ll be our first flying somewhere vacation since Spring of 2019 I think? I was looking at flights and it seems like I can get to Boston with just 1 stop on Alaska (in Seattle) - so hopefully that turns out to be a good option. Now that I think about it.

It unfortunately wouldn’t surprise me if some people pulled that move. At least for this year it seems like maybe it’s a non-issue as it’s just 0.1% of the athletes. Not sure what percent of the US population identifies as non-binary

Indeed. A lot of people in my area are simply not interested in paying for the bib, hotel and various other fees associated with the race right now.
