Bored of conventional training

I was starting to get somewhat bored with the conventional swim, bike, run, weight training routine, so I decided to do something different for a few days… Kickboxing.

Like most of the people here in any given day I can run 20 miles or bike 75-100 and come back home feeling relatively fresh.

Last weekend did one 45 min session of kickboxing and I was really sore the day after (whole body). To me this is something I haven’t been able to experience in a long while. It makes me think that adding a session every week will be a good idea so that I can achieve that so called “muscle confussion” and develop other muscle groups.

On the other hand it makes me think that maybe I reached a plateu on the basic sports that being the reason I don’t get as sore when going out for a long run or a long bike.

Anybody cross training like this?

You don’t get sore because your body has adapted to the usual stress. Give it time and it won’t get sore from kickboxing either.

Years back I was doing the kickboxing thing. I did very little specific cardio, only a few miles a week of running perhaps when trying to get in to fighting shape. But 3 times a week I did an hour long heavy bag workout using the ring timer. This is a device that rings the start of a 3 minute round then gives you a minute rest between rounds. During a round I would throw 500+ punches. I could throw as many as 70 punches during the final 10 seconds of each round. It was the most intense anaerobic intervals I’ve ever done. As a result my anaerobic capacity at that time was higher than it was when I was a very competitive runner.

If I had put that amount of time and intensity in to RUNNING intervals I would have ended up injured. I think it might be a good way to add back in some non-destructive interval training in to my program.

It makes sense. Actually and I know it can be psychological but my last run after this kcikboxing workout was great.

Are you related to Brad Yeager?

Not that I’m aware of…but perhaps he’s a long lost relative?
Is he someone from this board?

You’re not doing it hard enough!

I suspect that is the case…

Brad Yeager was the race director of Triathlantic Association (Maryland, Delaware area). He used to put together high quality events. Unfortunately, Triathlantic closed operations after some rednecks sabotaged the River Watch 2004 race by throwing tacks all over the race course. This wasn’t the only reason for him to close but it definitely pushed him in to do that.

How about Chuck Yeager?

Also not related, that I know of…I do hear that my family tree extends back to the Appalachians as does his…So maybe!

I am, but it’s due to coming back from injury rather than being bored with swim bike run. Today was 60 min elliptical, 25 min on the rowing machine, 2.5 mi run. Rowing machine, me likey. Elliptical not as much…

“Rowing machine, me likey”

You just like the rowing machine because it has to do with water…sort of.

But more importantly, you are on a beautiful island and you are rowing in a gym?

Hope the road to recovery is going well. We are coming up to NEH from the 22nd to the 25th. There is a time trial over by SWH on the 24th…maybe you’ll be recovered enough by then to give it a shot? $10 for first time time trialers…

time trial? I thought we were going to ride up Cadillac!!!

LOL about the rowers. I work at the gym…our rowers have water in them. Not a concept 2 - they are nice, wooden, with a ‘water wheel’ in front. Makes a beautiful swooshing sound.

this morning I’m going to get a massage. this is part of the road to recovery  maybe I’ll be able to do timberman on the conecpt of “residual fitness” but all bets about cycling vs swimming will definitely be in your favor.

Have you tried trail running?
