Anyone else having their rear Aeolus 5D3 Clinchers filling with water on wet rides… ?
Following a recent 2 hr delluge I had to whip off the tyre and tube and empty out about a mug full of water through the valve hole… it was sloshing around in there like crazy.
Maybe Carl can comment on the possibility of a water drain hole either at manufacture or as a retro mod…
And before anyone chimes in yes i have a wet weatehr bike, the ride started good and a big rse storm rolled in… i don’t normally run em in the p1ssing down rain… more due to brake perf. than this issue…
Hey Jack, well if you count the valve hole then yes… if not (i don’t) then no…
There was shitloads in there… i think its the volume that surprised me…
I’m sure its not confined to the bonty’s… but as i have 2 sets of em clincher and tubs… i asked the q relative to them…
I know campy bora’s have holes as do the jet HED’s and the older Bonty Aerus alu / carbon wheels…
My stingers don’t either and they’re tubs, so bugger all chance of emptying out after wet ride…
My HED’s have little drain holes. Haven’t had them fill with water and have been through some bad rain.
But I imagine is could happen if it was pouring bad enough.
There was a decent amount of water in my Jet 6’s after the nationals last year - 200 km in non-stop pouring rain (that’s were my rainy profile picture is from). I had to take of tire and tube to get it out. I’ve used them in other races with (less) rain where it didn’t seem to be an issue, though.
I think you’ll have an easier time plugging all the holes with caulk than with drilling more holes. I’d start with any holes that are on the sides of the rims (if any) and the valce hole. Then if that doesn’t do it the spoke holes.
