Bonk Breaker Bars

My LBS does not carry Bonk Breaker Bars. Is there another bar that is similar in composition and breakdown?

Well what bars does your LBS carry and I’m sure someone can tell you the closest.

Amazon has Bonk Breaker…

I found Bonk Breaker bars to be comparable to Clif bars, in that they tasted the same and were equally cumbersome to eat. Clif bars are much easier to find in your local stores.

One big difference between Bonk Breakers and other bars is that they are gluten free. If you have a gluten intolerance this is pretty important. If you are looking for gluten free options including the Vega Sport Endurance bars and the Hammer Bars.

Being gluten free myself and trying several options bonk breaker IMO makes the best bars as far as taste and nutritional make up. My wife also makes something very similar with a sweet potatoe and banana base that is super tasty. If you’re interested I can post the recipe.

local rei?

I’m pretty sure there’s no gluten in cliff bars, they just aren’t certified GF. Depending on how bad your intolerance is (I’d never tell someone with Celiac to eat them, but a self diagnosed intolerance due to GI issues probably won’t have a problem with cliff bars).

check out www.vitaminshoppe.com and see if there’s a store near you. Our local one carries them. They are yummy.

I prefer Bonk Breakers to Cliff Bar. I think they are less fig-tasting, and taste better. Their high protein ones are really easy on the stomach and great recovery bars. The first time I ate a BBreaker during a half IM race, on the bike, was tough: it was dryer than I thought it would be, and I had to drink a lot of water with it.

how do they compare to Larabars?

Please post!

I’m with you…pretty much any solid food is tougher to get down during a race. But…bonk breakers are pretty tastey.

I order mine straight from bonk breaker
.

Larabars are great. I use them on my long bike rides. I find they go down pretty easily and give you good energy. I feel like they taste a little more natural than bonk breaker. Energy-wise I felt like they were pretty similar.

My wife has 3 that she makes on a regular basis. All 3 taste great to me, but the top one is by far my favorite. It has the same texture as a bonk breaker or cliff bar and stays together in the heat which is huge Recipes below:

#1
1 Large Banana
1 Cooked sweet Potato (skinless and mashed with the banana)
3/4 C honey
1/2 t salt
2 T cinnamon
1/4 C ground flax seeds
2 C gluten free oats
3/4 C almond flour
1/2 c raisins
1/4 C chopped walnuts

Mix and pack into pyrex dish. Bake on 350 for 35 minutes. Divide up into bar size and keep in freezer

#2
1 1/4 C gluten free rice cereal
1C uncooked gluten free oats
3T ground flax seeds
1/4 C finely chopped nuts (almonds or walnuts usually)
1/4 C Brown rice syrup
1/4 C dried fruit (usually cranberries or raisins)
1/3 C almond butter
1 T vanilla

Mix together and freeze

#3
3T Coconut Oil
1/4 C Carob Powder
1/2 C ground nuts
3/4 C unsweetened shredded coconut
1T raw honey

Melt the honey and coconut oil in a saucepan over low heat. Take off heat as soon as coconut oil is totally melted. Once combined and off heat, add the carob (or cocoa), ground nuts, and coconut and mix together. Pour mixture onto a small baking sheet covered in parchment paper. Form into a square (or shape of your choice) when cool enough to touch. Freeze or refrigerate until hardened. Cut into 4 servings

Order from Brian at Personal Best Nutrition, use code STWITCH for 10% off.

Order all your stuff from him, you won’t find better customer service. He has called me on weekends to assist with product selection, shipped stuff to hotels for me, etc.

I’ve got no affiliation, other than saying him and Running Warehouse are the two companies I can recommend in this sport with absolutely zero hesitation.

I order Bonk Breakers (apple pie) from Amazon. I think they go down a bit easier than Cliff Bars, especially during exercise. Bonk Breakers are also easy to open, given you just squeeze and the package pops. Very easy to open and eat with one hand.

Thanks, the first one does sound pretty good! I’m also a fan of sweet potato so that helps.

why are these on the course on IM’s now? what good does 7 - 10 grams of fat a bar do when your racing

an even better gluten-free/vegan option, in my view, is the Picky Bar, made by repeat Wildflower champ Jesse Thomas, a.k.a. Aviator Guy, with his wife (and repeat national 5K champ) Lauren Fleshman. Delicious, clean, etc … not super easy to find, although Sports Basement now carries them, in case you live near one of their stores.
