I have a 2.2cm benign tumor in my proximal femur. Does anyone have any experience with these? I am curious as to what recovery from removal will be like. I no longer run, but I do cycle as much as possible and need some idea what I am in for. I remember someone here having something similar last year. Ortho says it looks like a benign tumor, but is referring me to have it biopsied anyway as with this type of tumor there is a very slight chance for malignant transformation over time. ( All reports I read said the malignant tumors looked malignant). Obviously I am pretty concerned. any info appreciated.
Thanks,
Alex
No info but I hope you have no complications and have a fast recovery!
a buddy of mine recently broke his femur due to having a large benign tumor that weakened the overall structure of the bone. had to have a rod placed in his leg from basically his hip to his knee. the doctor speculated that they might have to go in and remove the rest of the tumor, but fortunately a second surgery wasn’t required. anyways, he’s pretty much fully recovered(he injured himself last labor day–sept. 1st if you aren’t a yank). now it’s a matter of building muscle and endurance back up(he’s also just a cyclist). apparently the recovery is a bit slow because there isn’t a lot of blood flow in the area to help the healing process. he was on a single crutch after about a month. doing some spin classes and the like after about the same period of time–maybe 1.5 months post surgery. caveat: he was fairly aggressive getting back into some type of workouts and had to scale back after a bit to make sure he didn’t injure himself.
now, with him actually fracturing the femur, i would believe his recovery was longer, but i’m not doctor so i couldn’t say for sure. in any event, as i said, he’s fully recovered and back in the saddle with no complications.
good luck!
7 years ago my wife had an Aneurysmal bone cyst in the front of the bone right below her knee cap (I’m not a doctor but could play one on TV). Had surgery to remove it, and then a bone graft from her hip to fill the empty space. She was on crutches for about 6 - 8 weeks. Aside from the scar and lack of nerve sensation in the area, I would say she had a full recovery.
Ortho referred her to a specialist at USC (Southern Cal) who had expertise in bone cancers. He did the surgery. They didn’t know it was benign until the actual surgery (did the biopsy while she was still on the table). I recall she had annual check ups for the first couple of years, to make sure it was okay.
BTW, this was a great lesson in getting 2nd opinions. Her original G.P. said the bump was a bruise or bone contusion and would go away. Didn’t even bother to take an x-ray. Three weeks later my wife goes to the Ortho who takes an X-Ray. The next day we’re at the specialist, and two days later she’s in surgery. Another couple of weeks and the bone would probably have broken in two, and it would have been a lot worse!!!
Thanks for the responses. My tumor is a liposclerosing myxofibrous tumor if anyone is interested. Will post as to my progress.
