Bone Conduction Headphones - Race legal?

I’m about to order these http://www.aftershokz.com/AfterShokz-Sportz-2-Open-Ear-Headphones-p/as320.htm for training. The don’t block your ear, and in theory, you can still hear everything going on around you. I don’t typically use headphones during outdoor workouts but I’m going to ops test these. What are the chances that race directors will allow these since they don’t interfere w/ safety/your ability to hear?

My guess is that you wouldn’t be able to use them during a triathlon. What you can’t have is the hardware that produces the audio: radio, MP3 player, etc. Even if the device has external speakers, with no headphones at all, it’s still an audio device. Now, whether you find them less distracting for training, that’s for you to determine.

They might not block the ear, but I would guess they get in the way of helmet straps when cycling, and bounce around when running.

Good point. I’ve honestly never read all of the details regarding mp3 player rules since I never use them. I am curious to see how well they work on the bike.

Have them, love them.

Only draw back is cable is a bit long, but for some that may be a positive.

Actually for running they don’t bounce much. Worked pretty well and for whatever reason, you can answer calls with them too. But eventually I’ve stopped using them since I prefer to train sans music.

From what has been said here I might almost have been keen to try them. But don’t you find that it’s the cable that will eventually give. I don’t mind replacing my $4 headphones when they give, and I have one set wired into my helmet, I don’t think I would spend $70 for 1 set.

The product seems pretty well built, and I mostly justified the $70 (I think I paid less) by telling myself that it is pretty new technology, so if it breaks on me then it’s my fault for being a “beta tester”. Plus the chance to go tell some random person I have headphones that don’t go in my ears is fun to talk about. But I only used them for trail running (used music to drown out some pain during an ultra) and I like hearing what’s around me still for safety’s sake. I never thought the cord to be long since you can wrap it up with the little velcro thing on the cord, and I ran with a hydration backpack so I didn’t have any cord dangling from my arms, lower back (?). To the OP, I doubt you’d want them to ride with. Haven’t really tried but I don’t think a helmet will fit comfortably on top and then there’s the case of sunglasses, those won’t even work with them.

train a lot in my swimp3, on home trainer too. not for an outside bike for sure

out of water i use sweat gutt’r to hold them.

recommended: good earplugs for running/trainer and wax earplugs for water - and you’re in a live concert !

I’ve had a pair since October and last month they quit taking a charge and wouldn’t turn on. Company sent a replacement within a week at no cost to me. Great customer service provided you get them from an authorized reseller. The cord is a bit long so it takes a little work to get everything situated right for a run.

You can hear traffic perfectly clearly with them on, and they fit fine with the helmet. My problem was that I lost the little charger USB and nobody makes these standalone. Take care of it or you’ll need to order a whole new set of phones.

I doubt races would sanction them.

y’all need to read the rules. It’s really not that hard.

i. Unauthorized Accessories. No participant shall, at any time during the event, use or wear a hard cast, headset, radio, personal audio device, or any other item deemed dangerous by the Head Referee. Any violation of this Section shall result in a variable time penalty.

Rules don’t dictate what you do in training, and considering that is where 99% of everyone’s time is spent…

Why did you ask if they are race legal?

Personally never understood why people train outdoors with music. Other than safety issues (bears, cars, etc) why not enjoy the outdoors and the activity without music or podcasts?

What are the chances that race directors will allow these since they don’t interfere w/ safety/your ability to hear?

I have an old ghetto blaster. It doesn’t affect safety or diminish my hearing either. What are the chances that an RD will let me race with it strapped to my bike?

As long as the dudes around you are jammin to it, who cares?
