Bone Bruise..How long to heal?

Anyone ever had a bone bruise, specifically to the patella? How long does this typically take to heal? I crashed about 4 1/2 weeks ago and I still can’t run, or ride hard. I was diagnosed by a good orthopedic doctor so I am pretty confident that it is a bone bruise, although I may get it re-examined if its not better soon.

Not the patella, but the knobbly top of the outer shin bone (tibia, fibula, I dunno), just below & outside the patella.

It took a long time: 4-6 months, IIRC. It was a while ago now, so I can’t recall exactly. I do remember thinking that it took a LOT longer than a broken bone would have done to heal.

Didn’t really bother me though unless I knelt down on it.

As ever, YMMV.

4-6 months!!! I could start riding again now through the discomfort, but will that delay the healing process?? I think I can start running again soon, although it may be painful. I don’t care though as long as its not going to delay the healing process.

More experiences opinions would be appreciated,

Thanks.

I used to get these all the time from soccer - but they were low shin bruises. Made running tough, painful. I often played through these injuries, and now have lumpy spots all up and down my shins - calcification or something like that. It’s definitely not good for you, better to rest and slowly ease back into it. But those were shins, not the KNEE! Anytime you are dealing with a joint injury, the inflammation from the bruise can have other side-effects that will affect the functioning of the joint. What did the ortho say? You need to get specific advice for this specific injury, I think…

I was swimming in a pool with no black lines at the bottom and waited too long to flip turn and hit the back of my heel on the pool deck. It took about 3 months for it to quit hurting whenever I applied pressure directly on that point. Injuries suck!

Did the same thing this spring. About two months before I could run without noticing it. My orthopedic doc warned me that it would take time to heal as the knee is in use so much.

Have bruised mine twice, in fact its bruised now. I would let your pain threshold be your guide and continue to train on it. Its not going to get worse, though it may retard the healing a bit. Mine took close to two months until the pain was not noticed. Have a beer at papa lou’s (the chug)for me.

I did it 2 weeks before IMWIS…I did the swim and the bike(with painkillers)…There really is no swelling left, I can feel a little though when I bend my knee all the way…The ortho told me I could get back to light cycling when I met with him for a follow up 3 weeks ago (which was 1 week after the injury/ within 1 week of the IM)…He told me that a little pain is alright, which I am skeptical about…I haven’t been riding or running, other than riding to class and a couple half hour EZ cruises around town on my commuter bike…
