Boils,stress,..they just wont go away

boils seem to get worse with the trainer sessions and incresed training time…have them now for over a year…should i try the antibioitics or chinese astragulus…whats it like taking antibiotics…probably from stress or a little too much sugar…i wash my bike shorts every few days…any ideas? theyre just annoying

i wash my bike shorts every few days
**
Does this mean you wear them more than once (bad, real bad) or you wait until you have a few pairs before washing them (ok)?

1 pair washed every 5 uses…but i also have boils on my cheeks a lot
.

Here’s the secret. First, baby wipes in the nether regions. Second, Neosporin for good measure. Third, wear clean shorts every time. That’s nasty.

Dude, once you have worn the shorts once they become a breeding ground for bacteria. When you put them back on without having washed them in the interim you introduce that bacteria colony to your more intimate areas, including your cheeks. This is why you are having problems. Those things are called saddlesores and they are mainly caused by bacteria.

Wash your shorts after every use. Buy more if necessary.
Use antibacterial soap when showering (I’m really hoping you do this after each workout). Really wash those affected areas.
Better shorts might help, clean shorts will help more.
Chamois butter or similar might help but only if you’re using clean shorts.

If you continue with your science experiment you might find yourself meeting some new and exciting forms of fungus too…

1 pair washed every 5 uses…

That is reeeeaaaaalllllly nasty. Wash your shorts after every ride and perhaps save up for 1 or 2 more pair. Make sure you shower soon after a ride. You may want to try showering with a product called Hibacleanse as well. Good luck.

Take all of your bike shorts to the most chlorinated pool you can find. Throw them in. Go home. Call up Emilio and order 5 new shorts. Wash the new shorts after each use.

You are joking …right? …nothing like riding in smelly shorts…

Wash your shorts after every ride, including a short spin on the trainer. Having more than one helps, worth the cost and they do last so it won’t be a recurring cost.

Wash your body ASAP when you’re done riding. Use a soap like Hibiclense (sp?) and scrub everything that was under the shorts like your life depended on it. Do this immediately after every ride.

Before you ride use Bag Balm, A&D ointment, Butt Paste (there are lots of others if you search) or something similar. Spread a thin layer in the crotch to break the friction.

If you are are going to ride with a bad saddle sore/boil coat it with a thick layer of Boil Ease before you ride. That stuff does nothing to heal/prevent but it numbs it very well and lasts several hours. I’ve ridden with some monster saddle sores and forgotten they were there.

If you are ramping up miles for the first time you may want to take a little Bag Balm (Butt Paste comes in a more convenient tube) with you on the ride and apply it when you get hot spots. That will usually prevent them from turning into a saddle sore.

Take care of your taint and your taint will take care of you.

I gotta hand it to you though, you’re tough if you’ve dealt with this for a year. If I washed my shorts every 5 rides my ass would look like a super-fund site.

Definately wash the shorts after every ride. If I am riding at home I just jump into the shower with my shorts on. I use dial antibacterial soap. Take the shorts off in the shower and wash them by hand. When you get out wring them out and hang over the shower to dry (this goes over well with the wife). They will be dry by the next day. . I tend to use shorts that are on their way to chamois heaven. Sometimes they are a little too transparent for outside use.

I would take a week off the bike and do a swim/run week. I’m guessing your cheeks will be healthy by then. Prevention is the key. Get this thing cleared up and move on.

i guess I have to know. Do you wear your underwear more than one day?

You have to wash the shorts, my brother or you will always experience this issue. Cleanliness is next to Godliness in this case.

update…boils got worse …went in finally for antibiotic…erythromycin…oral…felt funny for a day…then got bad cold…screw it,i threw them away…i ll live with a couple of boils …maybe i got the cold when the medicine killed all the good bacteria??

not finishing antibiotics = bad move. that’s how bacteria have developed resistance to antibiotics not, requiring stronger and more potent antibiotics. you should have finished them.

i only took them for a day
.

which was long enough for the medicine to kill all of the good bacgteria, no?

Your immune system is probably shot from the boils and the issues causing them, also any stress, lack of sleep etc. in your life. If you start antibiotics you should always finish them…they are not going to give you a cold (might screw your stomach up a bit and I always need to increase my fluid intake).

Contact your dr, tell him what you did, start again and finish the course this time.

Try a few days out of the saddle too to let it all heal up.

Have you changed your hygeine habits?

Man I wouldn’t mess around with boils and shit like that. My college room mates dad developed a boil on his back that he really never bothered with because he couldn’t see it. Any way it go infected really bad. It was located on his lower back on his spine. The infection caused permanent paralysis from the location of the infection down. Nothing to play around with. Get them taken care of if you can. Take the time.

i think the boils will go away …any suggestions??

For christ’s sake there’s a entire page of suggestions.

You’ve had them for over a year and you think they’re going to go away when you’re not doing anything to cure them…
