Blood Test Results - "high" HGB, HCT, RBC

RBC - 6.46 Ref Range 4.63-6.08
HGB - 21.4 Ref Range 13.7-17.5
HCT - 59.5 Ref Range 40.1-51.0

My un-athletic doctor thinks these readings are abnormal. I assume these numbers merely indicate a chronic dehydrated state. Should I drink a couple glasses of water and get re-tested?

You don’t run enough and probably live at altitude.

I run 6 days a week (short), swim 5 days a week, bike 4 times a week, lift weights or TRX 2 times a week.

I live at an altitude all right. An altitude of 700’.

Bjarne, is that you?

Tainted beef?

In all seriousness, I would have the tests re-done. Any past results show any abnormalities?

You’d probably get thrown out of the tour for those numbers.

I’d get re-checked. You might be blessed to be a genetic marvel, but more likely lab error. I doubt that there is anything actually wrong with you, but it is possible.

Yeah, I’m not gifted. Probably just need to drink something every once in a while.

you need to get re-tested. levels that high are rare even in severe dehydration. You might have polycythaemia rubra vera.

Do you take any OTC supplements? Just curious

5000 units of vitamin D
astaxanthin (4mg)
glucosamine/chrondroitin
ubiquinol (coQ10)
fish oil

Plus I think my wife puts some stuff in my morning smoothie. I’ll find out what exactly.

I’m no expert but those to me are scary high numbers. Like others said, you’d likely be accused of doping. I’ve read an article about a journalist who wanted to see the effects of some of the doping products. He used EPO to increase his HCT and got it UP to around 50. 59 is crazy high (maybe even dangerously high) so far as I understand it.

It can’t be due to dehydration alone given the high Hgb.

what are the rest of the indices?

MCV? MCHC? MCH?

I’m to lazy to calculate them.

Also, what is the RDW?

Did they look at the cells under a microscope? Anicocytosis? Poikilocytosis?

MCV 92.1
MCHC 36.0
MCH 33.1

Your non athletic doctor is correct and you should go have these checked. They may run the tests again, but if correct, then this definitely needs to be investigated further.

Looks more like PCV to me.

Have the test re-drawn.

If the indices are still that high you are at risk for such badness as a stroke or obstruction of other important arterial supply. You need to be phlebotomized at a minimum. Further lab diagnostics can be done on the blood after you are bled down to a more human level.

PCV?

polycythemia vera.

Sorry, caught using chart shorthand…

PCV = polycythemia vera

Some basics…
