Blood chemistry and top performances

Maybe I’ve got too much time on my hands but…Do you think top peformers could be predicted from pre-race blood chemistries like glucose levels, lipid panels (HDL, LDL, triglycerides) or other blood measures (beside those related to doping Hb, Hct). I wouldn’t guess so, just curious what other think? Flame away!

possible, but not from the markers you list (glucose, lipids) - rather: blood count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, transferin, iron etc
.

not at this time no, you could predict who the pros vs joes are but not the top pros vs the average ones
.

Could I also assume those with higher LDLs, and total cholesterol may have weight issue that would influence performance?

No

Here’s an interesting (somewhat related) article on V02 Max: http://53x12.com/do/show?page=article&id=47

keep in mind the person who wrote that article

Nope. There is currently no blood test for the following:

  1. Body position/stroke mechanics on the swim.
  2. Aero position on the bike.
  3. Is your bike an Orbea or Cervelo.
  4. Can you descend.

Tommy Danielson is the example of a rider who has great lab tests (same level as Contador…off the charts), but has never been able to perform at that level. It drives his DSs crazy.

well for one i think he might be overstating the difference between riding on a stationary bike and riding outside.

but the more general point that vo2 max alone doesn’t say a whole lot about how fast you will bike, or run is of course very true.

You can’t measure mental toughness and “heart.”

Those win more races and have better performances than pure bio-chem numbers.

Combine the two? You get champions.

well the vo2 max test does sort of include how much ‘heart’ you have as part of it. the harder you are willing to push the higher your score will be.

however some athletes will surely have more heart in the lab than others. but most are pretty competitive in any test, even in a lab.

The ones related to doping are pretty important. If you leave those off even for non doped athletes you really handicap any predictions.

That aside if you take 1000 23 year old males and do all sorts of lab tests on them (not including ones where they have to perform such as VO2 max), you could certainly tell which ones are likely to perfom better. You wouldn’t be able to pinpoint a world champion exactly though.

Like it or not M Ferrari is one of the most knowledgable exercise physiologists in the world. He is also a cheater, but that doesn’t diminish his knowledge.
