OK- looks like the superfeet insoles are taking a load off my PF and make running very possible, but they’re giving me some blisters. With a marathon in 8 days I don’t really have time to break my feet into them.
is Moleskin the solution?
I took my glove off today and shoved it in my shoe and it got me home. one of those little cheapo knit gloves- worked pretty well. Would prefer not to have to use the glove trick in my race tho’.
Have you tried the Wright socks? They have 2 layers of fabric that slide on one another. I believe this prevent blisters in my case. Moleskin might be good, but I find that it rolls up at the edges when you sweat. Which in turn might make a bad situation worst. JC
Do you put it on open blisters? I’ve never had a problem with it burning, but then again I’ve never used it on open blisters. I use it in places where I’d get a hot spot/blister when I run without socks, so it’s for prevention not treatment…I will say though the fumes can be bad because I’ll put quite a bit on my foot (dime size drop) then with a rubber glove on spread it around, after doing 2-3 spots on a foot, the fumes are overwhelming.
If the blister hasn’t popped, then get some small scissors or toe-nail clipper and make a hole in the blister in order to let it drain and release the pressure. Clean up the area with rubbing alcohol. Soak your feet in warm epson salt and then let your foot breathe for a while after the foot bath. When the foot is completely dry, put one layer of breathable tape like medipore over the blister and a piece of moleskin over that. On top of the moleskin rub some waterproof gel like hydopel. If you can wear a liner sock, do that, or find sock with two layers. You could also just put Second Skin on top of the blister area and cover with tape like Elastocon.
I’m not a fan of duct tape or super glue because those don’t breathe and let the blister heal. If you are in a 100 mile race and you don’t have anything else, then pull out the duct tape and tape way. But with 8 days you have plenty of time to address this situation and still run a great race. Good luck.
www.zombierunner.com has good info on blisters, and many trail running sites will discuss blister treatment and prevention.
Thanks. I did the needle trick a few days ago, and the surface skin has now re-attached itself to the skin below. I realize this is temporary, but by the time it falls off, the skin underneath is much closer to being ready.
The problem is with the brand new Superfeet. Tried a 12mi run this weekend with them and after 5 mi I ended up shoving my glove into my shoe (which worked surprisingly well). Anyway- I’ve decided not to use the Superfeet for the marathon (which is now less than 5 days away). So, I shouldn’t have too much of a problem … at least not with that particular blister… I’ve got some PF I’m dealing with… and of course marathons are brutal and I’m on the edge of being able to BQ- so I’m preparing myself for all kinds of pain. Can’t wait!
Yes on an open blister, two actually. I made a serious rookie mistake a few years ago and ran without socks a few days before a race. This was my first attempt sockless and I developed two gnarly blisters that tore open during the run.
But the super glee worked like a champ even staying pit while I swam, bike and more importantly ran. Nowadays I rarely wear socks.
ouch, yeah I use them as prevention. Used to have to build up to going sockless, now when I put superglue on for race day no blisters…works like a charm.
The original blister from the new shoes with superfeet in them got better before race day, but I still had some hot spots.
I used my old shoes (177mi on them) which didn’t cause any more rubbing, and put duct tape over the hot spots.
Cool…Congrats on a great race…After two years of illness I am returning to full distance this year and in the fall want to BQ…Hopefully will see you there!
