I’ve asked this in the past (probably on BT) but I sweat a lot. Especially in the heat.
On the run I usually carry at least 2 head bands. Sometimes I’ll carry 2 headbands and a visor and swap them out/wring them out along the way.
But on the bike I can’t really replace the head band mid ride. Today on an hour and a half ride my headband was pretty much over flowed after 45 minutes. Probably would have been sooner, but we had a good head wind on the way out, after the turn around with less wind to dry the sweat my glasses had sweat inside them, I have sweat running down my nose, and eventually my eyes started burning and I had to stop, remove the helmet, and ring out the Halo.
I’ve used both Halo and Head sweats, but nothing seems to really work for longer, hotter rides.
I have the same problem. Get a Halo 2 headband. It has a rubber gasket in the front that diverts the sweat away from the eyes. It isn’t 100% but it is much better than a normal headband when it gets soaked through.
Yea, I have halo with the rubber gasket. I even reach up and push the sweat to the sides when it gets full, that usually helps for a few minutes.
I wish I could change it out, a I even thought about getting some of the bandana style Halos but I don’t think I have the dexterity to tie it while I’m riding.
I have both styles. The bandana style works better for me because I can tie it tigher. I wish that gasket was a half inch longer on each side though as the corners are what get me. I tilt my head to the side periodically to “drain” it every now and then.
Unfortunately, for me, the GUTR and Halo2 were both total fails on the bike. The GUTR is actually excellent for the run, but on the bike with the head tilted forward, it’s a no-go. THe Halo2 works for many, but it’s totally useless for a heavy sweater like myself - by the time I’m working, it’s totally saturated and useless.
I don’t have a solution for the on-bike sweat, but I have found a key move that prevents the ‘razor-like burning’ in the eyes. A lot of the really severe razor burning feel is not from your sweat - it’s from sunscreen, particularly thick sunscreen that comes down with your sweat. If you do not apply sunscreen to the areas right above your eyes and eyebrows (I still do apply to forehead), it makes a huge difference in the burning. If I apply the SPF60 stuff to my eyelids and eyes area, I’ll get burning so bad when it drips down that I pretty much have to stop. No such problems without the sunscreen.
If you are going to use one of those two headbands though, get the GUTR - it’s way better than the Halo2, and even if it doesn’t work on the bike, it does work great on the run. (Useful for hot humid days.)
Pretty thick. It won’t run, it will stay in place.
Everyone I’ve ever suggested to has been happy with the results, mostly cyclists so not so sure about running but I suspect it will work there as well.
Also, I’m sure you’ve done this as well…cut your hair as short as your SO will let you get away with
I thought I read that the gutter tended to dump the sweat in aero position.
Any issues with changing position?
The Guttr really doesn’t work that well on the bike, since the center of your forehead is the lowest point on it when you look down. Much better on the run where the sweat can drain off the ends near your temples.
I’ve tried a few options (gutr, vaseline/similar above the eyes) but the only thing that consistently works is to just squirt some water on my forehead/in my eyes. In races, there’s usually plenty of water available. You don’t need to drench yourself–just enough to dilute the sweat so that it won’t sting.
I have a hard time believing anyone can sweat more than I do, and the halo solves my problems. But some sunscreens burn my eyes, even with the halo. I have to be careful with sunscreen though, some will burn my eyes to the point that I can’t ride safely.
If I apply the SPF60 stuff to my eyelids and eyes area, I’ll get burning so bad when it drips down that I pretty much have to stop. No such problems without the sunscreen.
Just curious, why would you ever put sunscreen on your eyelids? Excepting once or twice when I’ve fallen asleep, I can’t remember ever sunburning my eyelids.
The subject was a bad play on the song lyrics “Blinded by the light”. Only I didn’t put enough effort in it to actually make it clever or recognizable.
Sunscreen might be part of the reason for the burning, and I admit that I put some on my forehead yesterday - mostly to even out the line I had from standing around in the lake with a swim cap on a week ago. I will take care to not put any above my eyes when biking in the future.
But when this happens I also have sweat on the inside of my sunglasses that makes it hard to see. I have been known to take them off and hold them in the wind to dry them for a while, or even throw them in my jersey and give up.
In theory I’d like to get a nice aero helmet with a visor one day, but the idea of less cooling, and of not being able to wipe my eyes makes me rethink how nice that would be.
Having also experienced the same issue (riding with a buzzed/shaved head in the past), I have some weird advice that actually seemed to work for me. BEFORE a ride, I would actually saturate the helmet pads with water, then squeeze them out with a finger (while in the helmet). I don’t have a great explanation to offer, much less a scientific one, but starting with pre-moistened helmet pads in this manor lessened the amount of sweat that would escape from the pads and into my eyes. At a mid-ride break, repeat the process. I would get through a 2-4 hour ride without getting my eyes stung. Oh, and another thing, DON’T put sunscreen on your forehead - OUCH!!!
