Anyone else seen this on Netflix? It starts with discussing the death of a trainer at Seaworld and then progresses to showing how orca were captured. All for the entertainment of humans and profitability of SeaWorld. It adds to my disgust of how we humans treat animals
wait until you hear about factory farming

wait until you hear about factory farming
And wolves

wait until you hear about factory farming
Like I said, this is one of many things we humans do that I find disgusting. There’s a lot of bad ways we treat each other, and animals. No matter what the scenario, it’s just hard to comprehend why we do it and why we allow it to continue. Guess it’s like making hot dogs, or sausage……as long as you don’t know what’s in it, or how it’s made, most people will consume away
I saw it when it first came out. The saddest thing is how very intelligent orcas are, and then knowing how depressed they must be being held in captivity.
That probably goes for most animals in a zoo.

Here you go, just happened recently. Simply unparalleled cowardice and savagery.

I know the answer isn’t black and white, but humans will always do terrible things to other living things as long as they feel it benefits them. The rationalization is easy. I think we do these things mostly for financial reasons, but there is also a sense of survival instincts as in if I don’t eat this animal I will starve.
I hate that I’m quoting Joe Rogan (or maybe it was one of his hunting guests). It’s been a few years, but stuck with me. They posited in 50 years we are going to look back and not believe we were such savages with animals.

That time is already here.

That is horrible. I never like to wish anything bad upon anyone but this POS deserves whatever bad karma comes his way. The article says he owns a trucking company so I hope he at least takes a financial hit since people can see he is NOT a good person. Shameful part to add to this is the topic of wolves is so controversial out west that some don’t even blink an eye at such disgusting acts

Certainly for many mammals, yes.

You knew what I meant and no we are not, as evidenced by the current factory farming practices and the hundreds of millions of people who don’t give two shits about how food gets to their plate.

Just mammals, eh?
I think that you might be vastly underestimating the intelligence and internal lives of fish, amphibians, reptiles, and birds. Especially birds.
I started watching that with the kids the other day. Maybe a bit much for the 9yo but I think it’s a good lesson to learn early. They’re growing up on a black angus farm and see the bonds between mothers and calves so it’s not a new concept for them, but their grandparents don’t seem to mind taking them to SeaWorld, carnivals etc so I think it’s good they get to see the other aspect of it.
A few months ago the local zoo that we frequent a few times per year was shut down for poor animal treatment and conditions. It didn’t appear to be one of “those” type facilities but I would imagine most roadside zoos probably operate in similar fashion.

No disagreement, but I don’t think the topic of wolves is controversial. I think the topic of cowardice is controversial. And wolves just nakedly expose people’s cowardice. It is always about killing the messenger.

Sorry, I did not mean to be contrarian. I more meant to say that, just like slavery, awareness far far preceded an actual change in action or law. Most people in the developed world are well aware of the evil that we commit to feed ourselves. But most intentionally look the other way.

Understood and I didn’t think you were being contrarian. You are more optimistic than I am in regards to where we are at. The bolded part is interesting. My wife, who most would consider an animal lover, above average intelligence, and way above average empathetic tendencies, is not “well aware†of how her Chik-Fil-A sandwich gets to the table. She’s not well aware because she refuses to listen to or watch anything that shows the savagery involved. She understands it may not be great, but that’s as far as it gets. Sure, that’s intentionally looking the other way, but it’s based out of fear of the truth. I think they are quite a few people like this. They hear evil things happen, but don’t know just how bad it is.

Interesting explanation. I sort of agree, but I think the fact that she intentionally avoids learning the details shows that, subconsciously at least, she is completely aware. No, not of the exact details. But she is totally aware that the process is evil, and that she is contributing to it. She just can’t handle facing that fact.
When someone is being murdered right on your street and you make the effort to deliberately look away, you’ve basically joined forces with the murderer.
I see your point and agree with some statements. How can you be “totally aware†something is evil if you don’t know the details of that thing? As far as she “knowsâ€, these animals are raised in a confined area (not great), get fed lots of food (good thing, but not really), and at some point get slaughtered for food stuff. She’s heard “evil†things happen, but I can assure you has no idea the depths of it. Definitely willful ignorance based on fear of the truths. She is one of the hundreds of millions whose views would have to change for our collective perspective to change.
We stopped going to animal exhibits long ago which I think a lot of others are doing the same, but the food stuff is going to take decades for any significant change. Just look at the opposition to lab grown meat. Or the opposition to lab produced diamonds. We have perfected the diamond in that environment, but as the meme goes, we just like the suffering of diamond mining too much to stop buying them.

This is a challenging question.
During WWII, did the German citizenry know what was happening in the death camps? Clearly, some did very explicitly. But many, perhaps most, did not know, but yet many of them knew implicitly. Collectively, we humans are very smart and we pick up conscious and subconscious cues in the trillions of bits of information that surround us. So even if they do not know the exact details, they can “fill in the blanks” and deduce the horrors that happen behind closed doors. And, perhaps to keep their sanity, they knowingly and strenuously avoid facing any information that might possibly fill in some of those blanks. But yet they still know of the horror.
I think this film tries to capture that. I have not yet seen it, but, from what I have heard, it seems that it exactly addresses this dichotomy.
