black socks or white socks? Short or extra short?
short black
.
Black, short.
short / white
.
Go completely retro. Knee length white tube socks with the colored stripes at the top. (color needs to match the bike color, of course.)
None
.
either as long as they are super short. Stubbies we called them, the ones that barely come out of your shoe. Though I prefer black, either is good.
why black - won’t they make your feet hot???
black – super short, if I wear socks on the bike. Try to wear them on the run b/c I can’t go barefoot with orthotics.
No, I don’t think black socks make your feet hotter, at least not appreciably.
Red all over.
None.
Yeah, my shoes stink.
My Dad says once you go black, you never go back.
super short or none, otherwise you look like you got cankles!
I like your Dad! Sounds like a cool ‘brutha.’

If you have to ask there is no hope for you. The simple act of asking shows you have flair. Go with the white short socks. They are safe.
What are cankles?
Knee high tube socks.
John Madden once circled a linesman’s cankles and had a 5 minute discusion about how big the dude’s cankles were. Funniest thing I ever heard come out of a broadcast booth.
Cankles are when you have really fat lower legs, and the fat from the calf area sags down and covers your ankles. You don’t see an ankle bone and it looks like the foot is attached to the leg without any curves.
I started wearing black socks back in the mid 90’s for running and cycling. Sugoi was experimenting at the time with various synthetic fabrics for socks to come up with the best fabric. What I found back then and continue to find to this day is any white synthetic sock, get’s stained and discoloured easily and stays that way forever. However, the black never shows this dis-colouration and they stay looking like when you bought them for a very long time. I lived in Vancouver back then at we ran and cycled in the rain, A LOT! One run/ride in the rain with a white synthetic sock and it never looked the same.
That being said, white far out sells black by a huge margin in the sock market. Fine by me. I like black( or other funky dark colours) and often see them in the discount bin near the end of the season. It’s funny where you see black socks being worn in running, cycling and triathlon races - it’s either at the front of the pack or at the back of the pack and rarely in the middle. Just an anecdotal observation.

If I wear socks on the bike (only on longer rides) I go with white because that is what I run in. I agree that white stains easier and never gets truly clean looking, but I go through socks so quickly it really doesn’t matter. Once the elastic at the top starts to loosen even slightly the socks are retired. I can put up with all kinds of weirdness/ickiness/whatever, but loose socks drive me nuts.
