I am going to visit relatives and will be staying in Sunset Beach. I plan on bringing my road bike with me and was looking for some routes in the area. I know that there are some bike lanes and so forth. I am looking forward to 4 days of mid sixties and clear roads instead of 30 and 10 inches of snow.
Pacific Coast Highway for all the above. You can also get on the Santa Ana bike trail. It starts on the beach at the Huntington Beach/ Newport beach border and goes over 30 miles inland, no cars, no traffic.
For hills close to the coast I do this. PCH - left @ Jamboree right @ San Joaquin Hills Rd nice steady climb up to Spy Glass Hills rd go left to San Miguel and go right…to Ford Rd and a quick left on Praine and another quick rt on Bonita canyon rd to Newport coast make a right and go to the top and back down to PCH make a left and go south to at the Stop and Go (just as you enter Laguna) I make a u turn and head north back to NP coast make a right another nice climb. At the top there two steeper climbs Vista Ridge and Ridge Park RD I generally do both. From there you can back track home. Lots of options with this just get a map.
For a another great ride head out to Santiago canyon rd. If you want to do this PM me.
Most of the year there is a tailwind going up the Santa Ana River, However with Santa Ana winds blowing super strong lately, that may not be the case. I rode on it today and there were freak 30 mph winds blowing out of the East.
x 2 on the San Joaquin Hills Rd. Laguna Canyon is also very nice and you can link it out to Santiago Canyon for a big ride. The Canyon is a lot of fun. A search for these spots on Strava or Mapmyride should give you lots of options.
It was nasty… but a perfect day to set a PR rolling to the beach
Viking, if you are interested, we should all get together for a ride. Us Orange County peeps could give you plenty of info on spots to ride and show you a few good routes. Also, if you are a USMS (masters) swimmer, you could go join up with NOVA swim team (www.novamasters.com) in Irvine and just pay for the $4 lap swim fee and get a coached swim with a bunch of other triathletes. They have at least five coached swims a day and often times a small group will make it a brick and head out for a ride from the parking lot.
Also, look up shop rides from Rock n Road Cyclery, Surf City Cyclery, Bike Religion, Santiago Cyclery, The Path, Revo, etc. Surf City and Bike Religion have shops near where you are staying. Have fun.
I’d love to meet some people for a ride. I’m actually coming out over this weekend though so that my throw some people off with the holidays. I plan on riding Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Plus probably running 2/3 days as well depending on how hard the rides are and how much the family has planned.
I am getting in some good workouts this weekend but I have to work around some hectic partying schedules so probably couldn’t meet up this weekend. Have fun out there, be safe, and let us know how it goes.
So far so good! Rode down to the end of the Balboa Peninsula yesterday and ran 7. The surf has been great in the morning as well with 5-6 foot sets and glass, but the water is cold! (~55 degrees)
Glad you’re having fun in SoCal. Yeah with all the wind last week the water temp was going to drop. Looks like another classic SoCal day out there. Heading out for run myself in a few.
