Our five dogs and seven bikes share garage space. All the bikes stay wall-hung, and we do our best to groom and brush the dogs regularly outside, but there still al lot of dog hair that finds itself onto the bike, lubed drivetrains in particular. I put a new chain on a bike about a week ago and y’day when i took it down to clean cassette, etc. the chain had a coating of fur !! Figure a lot of you have similar situations, anybody got a good solution ?? thanks.
I refinish a lot of furniture in my garage and one of the tricks I do is wrap a plastic shopping bag around the drive train and brakes. With that being said, my good bike goes into the house while Im sanding and I only do this to my beater bikes.
Why are your dogs kept in the garage?
3 cats, 2 pugs, our house is a melting pot of fur. we got leather furniture, and have hardwoods…but some things just can’t be helped.
as for the bikes, how about not letting your dogs in the garage? some fur will get in there no doubt…but if they can stay out of that area it might help.
You must have a huge the garage!!
how about the cars? Do they share the garage as well?
Fred.
Yes why are the dogs in the garage?
keep the dogs in the house, bikes in garage, or vice versa, but as a dog lover Id vote for dogs in the house. But then again, my house is a total smelly dog hair infested den.
Sometimes I keep my boyfriend in the garage, but never the dogs!
But seriously: yes keep them (the bikes, not the dogs) covered with a tarp or find another spot, like the basement. I can’t keep my bike or even the helmets, shoes and other paraphenalia as my dogs KNOW when I put a helmet on, or when they see me in bike clothes, they know I will be gone for a long time and they have a huge pout. So they are resentful and chew up all my stuff so I have to keep the dogs and bikes separate.
But 5 dogs? what kind? that is pretty cool, we sometimes think of another. But 5 seems like a ton of work. (and hair!)
Here as well… dogs in the house, bike and other toys in the garage.
And usually the dogs will let me in the house as well… though not always the bed.
I can’t imagine 5 in my house, but would love to try!
I love my dog. …It sounds like to much lube on the chain. Lube is needed on the inside of the chain. The outside just collects dirt. I lube, let set the spin the chain in a rag till no more oil in rag. Repeat every 100 to 200 miles. (Demonde light).
that’s the thing, new chain and no lube added, just the new chain tackiness…
Well I guess I can understand. I live in Montana and spring comes late here. No leaves on the trees till the first week of May. This just happens to coincide when my Lab-Aussie mix starts leaving hair every where no matter how much I brush…However, I will keep the dog and put up with the hair. I just love her to much, and my wife even more…Yes me loving the wife and the wife loving the dog err…Shelly
“kept” is your word, not mine…dogs have the run of a fenced twenty acres and access thru their door into the garage, their “dog house”, if you well.
Lab-Aussie sounds like a great dog, although maybe a little too smart ???
My wife’s car also shares the garage, my Avalanche stays in the elements. Would post pics if i could ever get everybody to pose…
Yes she is incredibly sweet and docile. However, she once got the cabinet door open with a child protector, took out a new jar of peanut butter, opened it without chewing through, took the seal off, and when we came home was eating it on her blanket (only place she is allowed to eat in the living room)…We will not even go on how she knows to get ice and water out of side by side fridge…Probably the best story is when a friend brought a 6 month old baby over, and Shelly thought it was the greatest thing of poking her nose in the baby’s belly, baby wouldlaugh and grab ears…then repeat.
20 dog proof fenced acres, I’m impressed with your fencing budget. I have 3 large hairy dogs and only 3 acres fenced for them and that cost a lot. (Mine do get to do obedience and agility classes a few days a week too) and I still “keep” them in the house. Their “dog house” is the same as my house. They want to be with me and the family all the time anyway. Yes, I have hair balls floating around, drool spots to mop up and even occasionally find a dog in my bed. I wouldn’t have it any other way. They wouldn’t either.
To each his own.

your dogs are fortunate indeed !! So (back to original issue), does Joe keep his bikes in the garage since the dogs aren’t there ? Or does he have a separate building ? (that’s what i think i need, trying to convince myself, i guess)
