Bike weight distribution (a test)

Yesterday I did an interesting “test”: I put a scale under each wheel of my two training bikes and with a friend balancing me weighed how much weight was on each wheel.

On one bike the front-rear weight distribution was exactly 50-50, and on the other it was slightly rear-biased.

That got me to thinking: what is the optimal weight distribution between the front and rear wheels? Is it 50-50 … slightly rear-biased … slightly front-biased?

I’m guessing Dan knows this.

On a road bike I always thought it was around 60/40 rear/front for ideal handling. I hope this 50/50 is on a tri bike. The reason why tri bikes don’t handle as well as road bikes is because of the extra weight on the front wheel.

I think Tom D has some good insight on this on an older post.

Dan answered this question here, awile back:

Was wondering how you might remember all that - until realizing that it was your post!
