Bike touring

has anyone here done any touring? after months of soul searching my fiance and i have decided it ain’t going to happen. not between her and i anyways. so…to clear out the cerebral lobes i’m thinking of taking a bike trip. i live in north texas, i’m from k.c., have friends and fam there that i would like to visit so thought i might take a little bike ride. i’ve never done any touring. camping is no prob. my biggest concern is knowing what roads are bike friendly when planning out my route. i’m going to look at used touring bikes this weekend at the LBS. i was thinking about a using a little more aggressive tire, i.e. cyclocross, so if i come across any dirt roads along the way i can keep on cruising.

anyone have any words of wisdom for this trek? i figured i’d get a bike and do some local trips first, one and two day out and backs. i’m thinking it would take me 5-6 days to get there, depending on how my routing took me. anyone live in far east OK or far west MO with a back yard i can camp in?

cheers, jason

I’ve done a bit of touring myself, believe it or not touring with some racers on a supported trip got me into racing in the first place. I’m not in your part of the country, but if you need equipment advice on anything camping or touring related pm me. I will start with a link that has caused as much fighting as “tubulars or clinchers”.

Panniers or trailer anyone?

btw I’m a firm believer in trailer. much better bike handling.
