I am furiously knocking on wood as I write this, but… does anybody traveling with a bike buys excess valuation coverage for their bike, or are you all fine with the $20 / kilogram compensation limit in case of loss for international travel (and $3,300 for domestic)? Or does homeowner insurance pick up at some point where the airline stops?
No homeowners does not cover it. Talk to your insurance guy about an inland marine policy or something like that. We had the full bike insured they could have lost it thrown it out the plane and it was covered for the full value.
Check with your insurance company but 99% of the H/O personal articles policies exclude coverage for damage that occurs while in commercial transit.
Yup check around on policies. The airlines will fight you tooth and nail about any damage done as well as look for an excuse not to pay. (As an example suppose you ship a bottle of wine home from Vineman in your bike box on FedEx and have the bike arrive in small carbon bits and the wine smashed… FedEx won’t accept a claim, it’s against their rules to ship Alcohol). People rarely have problems, but if they do it can be expensive and it always seems to happen before the race not after.
