Bike Insurance (2)

I know this has been discussed before but what are the proper steps in getting your bike insured from crashes and theft? What’s a reasonable price for bike insurance?

Thanks.

When I renewed my renter’s insurance, the agent I spoke to with Liberty Mutual said that insuring my bike (Elite Razor) would be a few hundred per year. I think insuring both of my bikes (Razor and C’Dale R1000) would’ve been ~450/year. She explained that bicycle insurance is so expensive due to the portable nature of bikes.

Depends on who holds your policy. My current rides are covered under my home owners insurance (State Farm), when I lived in NYC they were covered by my renters (USAA). However, my brothers bikes require a personal article floater because they are not covered by his policy carrier (First Mutual).

Though I couldn’t cover the entire value of my P3 (my policy only covers up to $2,500), Allstate charged me $.99 a month.

What are the steps you took to get insured? You added it as a rider? Does your insurance cover car & self crashes?

I have mine underwritten in my home owners insurance (AAA). It is $4-9 a year to cover $5k. If I leave it on the front lawn and someone takes it, it is covers. If I am in a crash and it is damaged it is covered. My deductible is $500. So the bike better be completely wasted for me to claim it.

I just received a check for $5900 for the Cannondale my wife killed last month by driving into the garage with in on the car. The bike, bike rack and house were covered under our homeowners with no additional riders. The damage to her car was covered under the car insurance, both were less their individual deductibles. Patriot Mutual…they have been great and recommend highly! The LBS said the ins.co. may want the bike, but ours did not and some parts are salvagable.
