Bike injury ? vastus medialis

Need some help…

Last year biked a ton, and by the end of 2010 was pretty fit on the bike for a new biker. However, I developed some left inner thigh pain, which I think is my vastus medialis. It is painful when I load my leg, running, biking etc. I took 3 months off from biking this winter, and ran around 50 mpw instead, and it got a lot better, in fact it went away 6 weeks ago I added 3 rides a week in…and it started hurting again.

I’m wondering if it a fit problem, or just leg weakness? I am going to try some strengthening exercises, but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or experience with this…

thanks!

I have had issues with mine as well. Medial head of quad was always sore after biking. I took it easy for 4 weeks (that didn’t help much), avoided higher power output (especially sprints) and what I think really make a difference was I lowered my saddle about 5 mm. After lowering the saddle, it felt better after a few days. That part of the quad is engaged at near full leg extension so for me, keeping my leg a little more flexed made all the difference. I’ve been able to ramp up the training again to prior levels without a problem. I have looked on the net and talked to numerous fitters and posted here as well asking for advice, but didn’t find any answers. Good luck with yours. It is a frustrating problem to have.

I am dealing with this problem, and realized it was an issue with my pedals (speedplay zeros) and way too much float. I took away a lot of the float and the problem is almost gone…just some residual pain that is healing quickly.

I forgot to mention I changed the pedal float too. I also had the speedplay zeros. I reduced how far my heels could come in by a few degrees, this also reduces engagement of the medial head of the quad during extension.

Thanks for all the replies…I went on easy bike yesterday, then ran 7 today with the mid 3 @ tempo pace. Leg was killing me! Might stop biking for a bit, and then try the changes you guys suggested.
