Bike gloves during ironman bike?

I can live with road rash on knees and elbows. Having a wound for 3 months on both hands is really a royal pain in the ass.

I’m old and my knees are a mess, I would rather land on my hands.

In the last ten years I’ve fallen down 2-3 times running and I don’t wear gloves or a helmet when I run, I’ve never fallen off a tri bike. I wear gloves on my mountain bike because I actually fall down occasionally. If you want to wear glove, I really don’t mind but it’s a risk I’m willing to live with.

I got a little scrape on my knees AND my hands a couple years ago trail running. No gloves and no kneepads :frowning:

I’ve never worn them in training or racing. But, I went down yesterday (@ 23 mph). I wish I’d had a pair on. I will, next time.

Why is an injury on the hands worse than on the knees?

Are you a bit dense ?

How many every day tasks do you perform with your knees ?
Not being able to use your hands is a royal pain in the ass.

OK OK I know we aren’t all pros but worth a look here…

Wow not 1 with gloves, wonder if the heats a factor too? When its cold I like gloves. And if there’s new aero bar tape I like bare hands.

How many every day tasks do you perform with your knees ?Walking. Getting up from sitting.

Not being able to use your hands is a royal pain in the ass.Now I have a question for you: are you wearing full-finger gloves all the time on the bike?

Many cycling gloves don’t protect your fingers. So what do you wear when it’s warm?

Walking. Getting up from sitting.

Hardly requires the dexterity that tasks with your hands require.

How many people here work in an office and have to type for a living or if you smash up your writing hand ? Or even opening a bottle of milk when all the skin has been torn from your hand.

As for types of gloves, generally you will take skin off your palm, hence the short finger gloves. But there’s plenty of full finger gloves out there that are designed for summer use and not warmth.
I’m wearing short finger ATM, as every crash I’ve had the damage has been the palm. I owned full finger gloves but they seem to have gone missing.

I’m wearing short finger ATM, as every crash I’ve had the damage has been the palm. I owned full finger gloves but they seem to have gone missing. You’re talking about problems (typing, writing, opening bottles) that are mainly about not using your fingers, and yet you wear gloves that protect your palms but not your fingers.

You’re really mixing things up talking about “all the skin…torn from your hand” and then just “the palm.” Yes, not being able to use the palms can make those tasks a more difficult, but having stiff knees from road rash is similarly annoying toward walking.

So in terms of your earlier question “Are you a bit dense ?” I’d say that considering that I:

  • know how to heal road rash in less than three months
  • understand that knees flex when walking
  • don’t stick out both hands to break falls off the bike
  • can type and write without using my palms.
  • can even open a bottle of milk with just my fingers
I’m surely less dense than you are.

All I wear is a codpiece. I don’t care if my hands get road rash as long as the Python is protected if you get my drift.

I always wear bike gloves during IM. I race a hot IM, the gloves provide sun protection for the back of my hands and I am able to wipe away sweat with them. With the added bonus of my hands not slipping on the aero bars and some hand protection if I crash ( 1 crash in 12 IM’s).

“And wearing gloves in a time trial will slow you down more than using a nonaero front wheel.”
.

Your hands / gloves and aero bars are the first things to hit the wind. I suspect that wearing standard gloves with a velcro strap would adversely affect how aero you are. Wearing aero gloves may result in the same or slightly better drag than no gloves.

A previous poster had a link showing that none of the top 10 men Kona finishers wore gloves. Looking at the TDF and Olympics TT there is a mixture with some riders with no gloves, some with normal gloves and some with aero gloves. Perhaps none of the Kona guys have a glove sponsor

I’m sure typing and writing would be so awesome when you can’t move your fingers because your hand is messed up. If you mes your palms up, you lose all the dexterity of your fingers too, try typing and see how much using your fingers actually uses your palms too. You would end up typing like a retard with your hands hoovering in the air trying not to move your palms. I know a guy said he would post pics, I think he should so you can understand what kind of damage can happen.

Do you really honestly think a scraped knee is worse than messing your hand up ?

You would still argue that your right even if i said i wear full gloves because you can tear your fingers up.

Ive fallen enough in other sports to know you dont break your fall with your hands. Great way to break your hand. Tuck them in and land on your side or your ass. Never break your fall with a hand. Thats really dumb.

Edit: I hear thats instinctual but hasnt been for me, so maybe dumb is the wrong word.

I know a guy said he would post pics, I think he should so you can understand what kind of damage can happen. So can we look at horrendous photos of knee damage to show what can happen to the knee? Man oh man, it sucks not being able to walk for three months… wear your knee pads always.

There’s a huge disconnect between talking about extreme damage but only wearing summer cycling gloves…

And if you’re suggesting that with some road rash we can’t move our palms at all, that suggests that with similar road rash on the knees we couldn’t move our knees at all. So if road rash means no movement, how will you do anything? Walk and sit with completely straight legs? And what about road rash on an elbow? Would you have to type with a completely straight arm? Or keep your arm bent in one position all the time? That would suck. That would make it hard to do anything with that arm.

you lose all the dexterity of your fingers too all the skin…torn from your handYou’re prone to hyperbole.

Sure, preventing road rash on your palms is nice. Wear gloves if you like, but it’s not a big deal not too. A little road rash (the type summer gloves will prevent) usually won’t stop you from being able to type.

Breaking your hand is much worse for you ability to type. Please think about what CP78 wrote above which is important.

You would end up typing like a retard with your hands hoovering in the air trying not to move your palms.Noted without additional comment.

Interesting to see your post.

I have been racing for year and will be doing my 6th Ironman next month (Wisconsin).

I have never worn golves during the bike but I AM GOING TO THIS YEAR.

This is both a comfort and safety thing. I would say that if you are thinking about it, do it. I dont really see any downside.

I wear gloves for training and longer-course racing, primarily for sun protection (thanks Polish heritage!) but also since I’ve had some nasty at-speed spills in the past, some without gloves and some with. Hand injuries suck a special kind of suck.

Velcro them together on your aerobars and ignore them until you’re clear of T1 and have some room to fidget them on.

JT,

We all have different risk tolerances. Not wearing glove can be a very big deal. A few years ago, a former US Pro champion was testing new bikes. He took his gloves off because they were soaked for the last test. Crashed and ripped up his palms. Had to miss the upcoming week-long stage race. In my little pea brain, that’s a big deal.

Gloves are like very cheap insurance - they cover you for a catastrophic event.
