Bike fitter around SE Wisconsin

I am looking for a really good shop to get re fitted to my bike. When I bought the bike I was new into triathlon and looking back I don’t think I was fit well at all. Before the season really gets going I would like to get re-fit to my bike, but don’t really know where to go. I am willing to travel a little bit.

Last week my brother who lives in the same city as me, took a 5.5 hour car drive to get fit at Gear West in Minneapolis, MN. His fitter was David Thompson. He told me that David really took his time with him and the overall experience was great. I’m not sure I want to drive that far to get fit, but I will if it seems worth it. Missionbay in Illinois is pretty close to here; any thoughts on them? Anyone else I should look for?

I am getting F.I.S.Ted this Fri. at the Bike Dr. in Dousman. I bought my bike there in 2006, but I am getting new aerobars, so getting another fit. I have always rec’d good service there. Mission bay is good as well. Mission bay is $100.00 hr/Bike Dr. $50.00 hr. There are a few other good bike shops in Milwaukee/Suburbs that can fit you, but the names are escaping me right now. Hopefully others will chime in with the names.

Try Brent Emery at Emery’s Bicycle and Fitness. Brent was an Olympic cyclist and now caters heavily to the Tri crowd. He fit me on my first bike and will do so again when my new bike arrives next month. Check him out at: www.emerys.com
Brent knows his stuff!

Go down to Illinois and you’ll have your best choices there. I believe there’s 3 great bike shops there with F.I.S.T certifications and/or spend their time with you.

I would skip Emery’s-pm me if you’d like details but I’d rather not air out stories.

Brent Emery definitely… www.emerys.com …he’s got all the tools and a great set-up to see the full thing come together. Giant plasma TV with a full computrainer thing going on… he’s a great guy and is PASSIONATE about fitting… you won’t be disapointed.

2nd for the bicycle doctor in Dousman.

Drive down to Chicago and check out Get a Grip. Go to the website and take a look at the Fulton Fit Studio. It is an entire facility dedicated to bike fitting.

Ridiculously cool studio.

They are one of the top fitters in the country. If you’re going to do something, do it right.

Ditto.

crank daddy’s boasts of some laser sighted fitter or some such… I have not been fitted there.

" Crank Daddy’s is proud to offer Bike Comfort Body Scanning CRM, a laser measurement system that will identify the proper sizing and adjustments for each individual rider. When being professionally fitted, your consultant will have you stand in the Body Scan module and then take your measurements. Measurements are entered into Body Scan software, which combines this data and information about your personal riding style. The software produces recommendations for ideal component and bike size and positioning to maximize your comfort and pedaling efficiency"

the best fit I’ve had in milwaukee was my road bike at ben’s cycle… I bought the frame for $250 and they said "bring it back when you get it built up and we’ll fit you… I was shocked. It may not be the detail you’re looking for, but I was very happy with it.

Emery’s fit was the “free with bike” version… I was pretty new to tri, and I can’t accurately say how it turned out…(that was back in '02)… I am much less stretched out now than he had me setup, but maybe I was more limber back then.

Could not agree more. I have never seen such professional fits that take more than just a spread sheet and protractor to come up with the best fit.

Cronometro on Williamson in downtown Madison. Well worth the trip!

One more for Transitions

Make the drive up to Gear West. You will not be disappointed with the fit. Kevin O’Connonor does a great job.

Ok … arguably a little bias here (see my signature line), but, no question – John at Transition in Pewaukee.

Seriously, John is F.I.S.T. certified, really takes his time, knows his stuff, and the shop is top notch.

Thank you everyone for all of the responses. For reasons I won’t get into, I bought the bike at Emery’s. I’ve been to Transitions to look around a few times so I will keep them in mind, but I’m also going to look at Get a Grip. Again, thank you for the suggestions.
