Bike Fit is Austin, TX?

Just did a quick check of he fit database and it is not up to date for Austin at least. Some shops are no longer in business and no one seems to have had FIST training. I checked there first so don’t scream at the next question.

Can anyone reccomnd a good fitter in Austin, TX. I already have a bike I just need to be dialed in some before I start making final cuts on the bike (ie steerer, stems etc). I am looking for someone with good tri fitting experience. the bike is a Shiv if that matters.

Thanks,

JW

Um, you are in Austin and you are asking that? Shit, there are TONS of pro calibur ships there. Jack and Adams (sp?), ATC and on and on and on. I think that there is a shop there that some Lance dude owns. Two Point Six Four Squared some such name

Zane Castro. Used to be at Jack & Adams. Now on his own as a coach.

Plenty of options:
Austin TriCyclist, they have several FIST trained folks on staff. Last I checked they did not charge for fits. Nice set-up where you can watch yourself in real-time on a screen.Jack and Adams, experienced folks, retul availableMellow Johnny’s (aka Lance’s bike shop), several pros (local and international) go there for fitting, retul. Huge base of knowledge from doing fits for all sorts of abilities and purposes (road, TT, tri, from amateur to Lance).I’m sure most if not all ‘other’ bike shops in town (and there are plenty) offer fit session, but the above are IMHO the best in town. Been around for quite some time, have the credentials and track record, know what they’re doing.

Zane is great, but not sure if he is still doing fittings. ATC will give you a free fitting. If you’re looking for retul, you may want to try Durata training.

ATC can give you a FIST fit, often a quick free one if you ask nice.

If I was looking to pay I would consider David Wenger for a TT bike fit.

Not only will ATC give you a “free” fit - (With bike purchase). But they will give you a real honest fit. They are not monkeys with a mantra and slide rude.

This is true and I have been to most of the shops in town with different experiences. I have also seen fits of friends from some shops that are not very good. An example would be the 2 custom bikes ordered through 2 different shops here that give each rider problems they odereded custom to avoid. I am hoping for personal sories of good experiences. Also NOT looking for a free fit either.

Not an argument - but some of the best fits I have ever seen are done for free - and with out laser levels and all that plumb bob malarkey.

I just got at fit at Jack & Adam’s. I ponied up for the Retul fit, done by Kevin. I’m really happy with it and he will work the fit based on your goals (comfort, aggressiveness, etc).

Austin Tricyclist can do a great fit as well.

Bicycle Sport Shop will do the Specialized version of Retul I think and have some knowledgeable tri-specific folks on staff.

I don’t know about Mellow Johnny’s (Lance’s shop). I’m sure they can do a good fit, but they are not as tri-centered as J&A’s or ATC. I got the ‘Lance Museum’/ coffee shop hipster vibe from them when I went there. I don’t think they have the brand selection that you can find at the above 3 shops if you are looking to buy a bike after getting fit

+1 for Jack and Adam’s though they fit me for a road bike, not a tri bike.

Stefan Rothe, owner of www.rothetraining.com does road and tri bike fits.

Contact him at stefan@rothetraining.com

Great guy (and pretty fast on a TT bike)

Edit: Yesterday he did a Shiv fit for a pro female who races in Europe

I live in Austin and have had several fits done here. Zane did a good job for me (he is married to a pro woman triathlete and coaches others). Jack and his staff at Jack and Adams are awesome and do the best bike wrench work in town. But the best fit I’ve had came from David Wenger at Durata. He does his fits at the Bicycle Sport Shop and he uses Retul. It is the most dialed-in I have ever felt. Plus, if you are buying new, he is a great consultant for what bike will fit you the best. Before I get my next bike I will work with him on what will give me the best combo of comfort and speed. David coaches a lot of badass cyclists and has a racing background himself. Link here: http://www.duratatraining.com/services_bikefit.htm. Feel free to let him know that Doug referred you. As an interesting little factoid, his partner, Derek Williamson, is married to pro Kelly Williamson who is on fire this year, winning San Juan and Texas 70.3s already. Good luck!

Stefan Rothe (ROTHE Training) does his bike fits out of Austin Tri-Cyclist. Best fit for your money ($100) unless you want to spend $300+ at BSS, MJ’s, or J&A.

Everyone knows that more is more, and more is good. So, if you spend more on a fit you get more of a fit and that is good. The same mantra holds true to the fact that we see many dimpled wheels and ceramic bearings under many dimpled thighs…

I have been to all of those shops, ATC would be where I went if I needed to purchase a tube. When in Austin, they are my personal go to shop.

he’s been recommended several times, but Wenger at Durata had good enough of a reputation that I went to him despite living in Dallas. good fit and great advice on what to buy that fits you.

Mellow Johnny’s will “recommend” a Trek. This has nothing to do with the fact it’s Lance’s shop  haha. But all in all, a good place for a fit.

Austin Tri, Jack and Adams, and Bicycle Sports Shop are all within like half a mile of each other, take your pick.

Bicycle Sport Shop & Jack & Adams are some of the best!!

Reviving an old thread - I have a decent fit on my current tri-bike that was based on a fit originally done by Rothe at ATC (I have tweaked a few things here and there as components have changed, etc.). I am in the market for new bike, and I am having a slight amount of knee pain (I think this is coming from the bike I have on the trainer, and not my tri bike). Soooo, I am thinking I would like to go in for an update fit before upcoming HIM and IM and/or a rec for a new frame – maybe a slightly more intensive fitting session this time around (taking nothing away from Rothe, he was great). Based on the above, if I get the fit done in Austin, I am leaning towards Durata, unless anyone else has some suggestions. On the other hand, I am willing to drive to get a good fit and I have heard great things about Tad Hughes in Houston, and Cynthia @ Bike Barn in Houston ---- Does anyone have an opinion whether it would be worth the drive? Also, I am sure all of them offer decent follow-up fits, but Tad’s pricing seems pretty reasonable and explicitly lays out the cost to return for a final fit after bike is purchased or refits - if anyone has experience with Durata on these types of follow-ups please let me know.

Long story short, is it worth the drive to see Tad, or is Durata just as good (and it would be of more benefit to have your fitter in the same town for follow-up tweaks)?

Thanks.

Brant Speed at Mellow Johnny’s. Or David Wenger. Take your pick.
