I’m trying to help a friend find a good place to get fitted for a new bike. She’s looking to buy something new and get some guidance on what bikes are a good fit for her. Lives in mid-Michigan, so anywhere in Detroit, Lansing, Grand Rapids probably fine.
Any names or locations that anybody has any experience with or reccomends?
Tom D., you out there? Any suggestions from your time here?
The guys at Two Wheel Tango, espcially Ken O’Day if he is still there, are excellent. Also, Scott Parr’s new place, affiliated with Two Wheel Tango- The Tri Shop, in Canton, likely has strong resources for fitting since Scott is a published author and former professional mechanic to Lance Armstrong and Motorola. Scott knows bikes.
At the opposite end of town the guys and girls at Fraser Bicycle are the high bar. They are excellent. There was a lad there named Tony V. who was an exceptional fitter. Actually, the entire crew at Fraser Bicycle are outstanding. There is a wealth of technical knowledge at that store.
I had a friend buy a Felt B16 at Fraser Bike last summer that came with a fitting. I was appalled at the job they did. Even Helen Keller could of done a better job. The rider was kind of a noob and didn’t know better, but his saddle was 1.5 - 2" too high! He had to reach with each pedal stroke to make it all the way around.
Based on that expierience, and that alone, I do not recommend Fraser.
Just throwing this out here but if you’re willing to make an appointment, pay a nominal fee, and drive down, the bikeworks in Toledo uses the Retul system.
If you haven’t had enough responses, I’ll throw another one in there for good measures The village bike shop in Grand Rapids (Actually located in ‘Jenison’ township, but only 15mins from GR) is a great place for a great fit. Even mention Justin of the Grand Valley State University Tri-club told you to go there and they may knock some dough off the fit. Good Luck!
Having had fits at both Fraser and Two Wheel Tango, I would never go back to Fraser. I’ll keep my negativity to this one comment.
What I walked out of there with was unsafe and the fitter was completely rude and condescending.
On the flip side, the guys at TWT were awesome. I gave them a heads up that I was coming down to buy and would be there about a half hour before close. They had my size and stayed way late to get me all set up. I think it was Brad that fit me, but I can’t remember.
Ken is still at TWT - works in the summers and by appointment during the school year.
I know the folks at TWT really care about the fits they put out there, and there’s several people they have trained in various fit methods.
I’ve had fits at several shops in Michigan the past 10 years. TWT is a good place for a fit. I highly recommend the young woman named Jess (Jessica) at TWT in Ann Arbor.
It’s too bad that Tom D isn’t still here as he was outstanding at “dialing in” one’s tri bike fit.
