I have a size 62 Trek Madone and I am looking to buy the speed concept bars to use it for triathlons up to 70.3.
I previously had an XL rim brake shiv which fit great but I sold it during Covid. My fit co-ordinates were:
Pad X: 421
Pad Y: 735
Saddle height: 860
Cranks: 175mm
I haven’t found any detailed fit specs on the Trek website about the fitting of the speed concept aero bars, but based on some loose calculations I think I can get pretty close to those Pad X and Y coordinates.
However, I think I have a problem with the saddle position.
The Shiv was 77 degree seat tube angle with a 12.5mm forward seat post position (ie it goes forward 12.5mm).
The Madone has a 72.5 degree seat tube angle with a 25mm read seat post position (ie it goes back 25mm). I know there is a 5mm option.
Based on my calculations, even with the 5mm seat post, the centre of the saddle will be about 83mm further back on the Madone compared to my Shiv.
So I don’t think I can mimic my Shiv position on the Madone? Any thoughts or ideas? Perhaps I have missed something in my calculations?
I currently have a Madone, I replaced the seat post with the 5mm offset, slammed the stem, and put my clip-ons effectively as far forward as I could. My current fit is good, but not a perfect TT fit. I could use a steeper seat post and lower front end stack to get to where I really should be, but hey it’s still a fast bike and I can comfortably keep my power up for a full, I’m averaging above 22mph it race kit, and I have a bike that I can take on group rides.
My 2cents, if you can get a full aero cockpit for cheap I would go that route, but remember every time you want to switch aero to road you will need to mess with the hydraulics, this is the main reason I haven’t gone this route. I’m debating going with a higher end clip-ons and narrrower road bars to better split the difference.
If you can find the trek madone speed set-up, that would be great. But from what i’ve seen they’re very hard to find and obscenely expensive.
You saddle will be a couple centimeters back from where you want, so be it. Get a comfortable saddle and be comfortable riding the rivet.
I am ok with the trek Madone speed aero bar front end, but it’s the saddle position which is a concern.
With the current 25mm post, my saddle is 10cm further back than my old tri bike position, and so with the 5mm post it goes down to 8cm. I don’t know any other way to get the seat post steeper?? It would awesome if they made -25mm offset post!!
Buying the Madone speed aero bars and 5mm post is still far cheaper than a dedicated tri bike so it’s worth considering it!!
