Bike carrier ideas for inside SUV

I am trying to set up a way to transport my bikes inside an SUV and am interested in ways others have gone about this. I would like to be able to put two bikes, wheels, and have room set off for soft gear in through the back lift gate. Organization would be a great thing!
We have a Chevy Tahoe and the inside is tall enough to have the bikes upright with the front wheel removed. I am planning on purchasing some fork mounts and mounting these onto a piece of wood. For minimal disruption I would like to be able to keep the back seats up. If I put one bike in cockeyed and turn the aerobars I can get it in without folding down the back seats. How long a piece of wood should I get to make this stable?
How do people secure the free front wheels and extra racing wheels? What about extra gear like pumps and bags?
Just fishing to try and avoid as much trial and error as possible.
Thanks for the input.

Have you thought about the Grabar kool rack? It’s for pickup truck beds, but it would probably mount in the back of a tahoe. They have them at www.sportsrack.com.

Can’t seem to get the link to work. It loads a page with the Thule logo, but nothing else and the logo isn’t a hyperlink. Any ideas?
Anyways, I went with the piece of wood idea and am going to put my bike in the car now. We’ll see if it works like I hope.

Nate,

I drive an 03 Tahoe. My solution does not allow for the back seats to be up, but it does have some fantastic advantages. I cut out a small swath of carpet from the floor of the car under the spring-hinged flap that folds down when you lower the seats, and bolted the fork mounts directly to the metal floor. When the bike is out, the mounts are completely concealed (by the flap when the seats are down, and by the seats when the seats are up) and the fork mounts do not interfere with the operation of the seats in any way. I have bungee cords that I hook to cable-tie loops that I’ve mounted at various places on the insides of the rear cargo area to further secure the bikes and to secure the extra wheels. I find that by keeping my bike in my truck almost all the time, that my bike mileage had gone up markedly (driving home, attaching my tow-hitch bike rack, and mounting my bike tends to be a deterrent).

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the ideas. I am definitely going for convienence with this set up. Having the bike around, like having the swim googles in multiple places means less excuses and more riding! Time to take a trip with the new setup…

I also struggled with this for my Subaru Outback, and wanted to create something that was less obtrusive than a 2x4 or a fork mount permanently attached to the cargo area. CycleRest attaches to the rear seat headrest and then when folded down secures the bike upright to better utilize the space. Also this set up is easily transferable between cars, and is designed for travel to use in rental SUVs when traveling for races.

Interesting concept. I probably wouldn’t buy it as I can get parts and make something very similar and non-intrusive similar to it for less than $100 though. The fact that I am an Mechanical Engineer kind of helps there.

Taking out the seat tube might be a PIA though for local races.

I was looking for precisely this! Thanks!
