Bike being rebuilt ... Is labor taxable?

Any tax experts out there? I keep trying to google. Since i am trying to find out if labor is taxable IN washington DC it keeps pulling up a million wacky organizations whose offices are in DC.

Anyone know if labor is taxable if parts are billed separately in DC?

On as side note, is $150 an ok price for a full rebuild? It seemed reasonable to me so I committed to it, just wondering.

TIA - paul

No, there is a “sales and use” tax only. The shop should break out parts and labor separately.

Is that a strip down, clean (etc.) and build back up (I assume so since you said ‘rebuild’)? If so, that’s a pretty typical price I’ve seen when I shopped around a few months back.

cool, thanks. any idea where i can get a citeable source? i am sure the shop will not agree with me if i bing it up unarmed.

If they’re doing a full strip down to the bare frame and rebuild, then yes - that is a fair price. Some shops have a “different” idea as to what is included in a complete overhaul, so its best to check in advance. Also, unless it’s Demerly’s store they probably won’t clean it for you. ;-p

EDIT – the law apparently changed since I was there. The following definition of “services” is taxable:
