Big problem with Thule rack

I have a Thule roof rack, I believe that it’s the Peloton, it’s the one with the Clamshell design.
Was driving yesterday and the bike flew off the roof, I figured that perhaps I didn’t tighten it properly.
When I got home I took a look at the rack and it turns out that the axle that holds the fork had snapped and the whole front portion that holds everything in place was cracked.
Wow I am surprised and disappointed, has anyone else experienced anything similar with Thule? what can I expect from Thule?.

Wow - that sucks! No, that should not have happened. In fact, last summer I had 3 bikes on my CTS-V wagon en route to a stage race. 2 Thule Pelotons and a Rocky mount. Took the car to 125mph on a couple of occasions (seriously) no issues. The 2 Thule racks are 6 years old and have been multiple different cars. I would contact Thule or where you got them and send photos/the headpiece back in. Bike toast?

To make matters worse I was giving my friend a ride, and it was his bike… a brand new Niner Jet 9, he has ridden all of one time.
There is a small dent on one of the chainstays, he is going to take it to a shop and have them diagnose it, hopefully it is just cosmetic…

Here is a (bad) pic, you can see where the axle is just sheared off and that white line is the crack.

Yikes. That headpiece comes off the rack. I’d send that in, document with good photos. That bolt is pretty stout.

Read your homeowners or renters policy, you may have coverage under that for damage to your friends bike - damage to personal property of others while under your care/possession.

Congrats on owning one of the very few CTS-V wagons ever built. But really, 125 mph with bikes on the roof? The racks aren’t built for that kind of abuse and if anything were to come off at that speed the results could easily be deadly. Enjoy the rocket sled but please use your noggin.

LOL! Predictable response. Reasonably sure they aren’t built for that either, but with typical factor of 2 engineering …

So … me driving, 2 others in the car: a PhD biochemist, and a GE engine aircraft engineer. We were all debating the aerodynamics of such a feat and were slowly testing … on some back country roads in southern Michigan with only us in sight. Nothing unsafe about it when we decided on a couple of short blasts (can see the entire thing through the ultraview double length sunroof as well). Rock solid - really!

And most of the V Wagon owners have all been in contact with each other and not a one of us is stock either

Perhaps you just got one that slipped through their QA process. I’ve been using the same Thule rack for 23 yrs now on a 1986 Volvo 240 with no issues at all. As rroof suggested, I would contact Thule.
