This guy failed drug test in 2003. Dozens more on a list, up to 107 of them. All names to be kept secret for now. Many “big name” guys thought to be on that list. Contrary to what many of you might be thinking, he isn’t Italian, Spanish nor a cyclist. He’s in fact Sammy Sosa. I’m sorry for making light of it, and I apologize too for using the word athlete when talking about a baseball player.
In team sports (baseball, football, etc) PEDs don’t directly affect the outcome like they do in endurance sports. Sammy Sosa took steroids and maybe hit 10 or 20 more homeruns than he would of. But how many games did that help his team win? How many World Series? Impossible to say. Bernard Kohl or Ricco takes EPO and suddenly they are winning stages at the tour. It matters more in the results and thus it matters more in the whole of the sport.

Not an athlete? As much as I like triathlon…I’m not afraid to admit that it takes way more talent to hit a 100mph fastball then it does to swim, ride a bike, and run down the road. That’s just the reality of the situation.

I think baseball is a despicably boring sport, but then I’m antisocial which is, of course, why I am into triathlon in the first place, right?
If it takes talent…then why would it not take hard work to obtain that talent. Nobody is born with the ability to hit a fast ball? It seems like people really just like making fun of baseball because…yes…it is boring to watch, but it is no where NEAR as boring as watching triathlon, right?
leading the league in strikeouts does not imply that you are an unproductive hitter. many of the most productive hitters have led the leauge in strikeouts. an out is an out, if your OBP is good, its good, even if all your outs are strikeouts.
and, any player, on PEDs, is going to affect the outcome of games. sammy/bonds/mcgwire didn’t just hit X more home runs. they also got walked a lot more, on base a lot more, pitched around, and on and on.
they were worth a huge amount of runs in their steroid primes.
He played for the cubs and leads the entire history of baseball in strike-outs. I don’t think he helped them win ANY world series.
As far as team sports, A pitcher on drugs could affect the outcome of a game
Athlete-yes
Big name- no
Perhaps if you are not into baseball or have only started paying attention to it in the past few years. Otherwise, Sammy Sosa is most definitely a big name athlete. Remember, he and McGwire were in the middle of a race to break one of the most sought-after records in all of baseball. And they both broke it. He had the commensurate big name salary for a number of years thereafter.
That’s becasue you don’t fully underdstand the sport. I have friends who think watchng the TdF or any other cycling event is tediously boring. If they understood the sport of cycling they probably wouldn’t feel that way
