SAN DIEGO – Judge J. Michael Bollman, known for decades in legal and political circles around San Diego, has died, officials said today.
A longtime San Diego County Superior Court judge, Bollman died Tuesday at his home in the Marston Hills section of San Diego. He apparently took his own life, eight months after a bicycling accident left him seriously disabled.
An autopsy was scheduled for later Wednesday.
Bollman, 67, a two-time candidate for state Assembly, was named to the bench in by Gov. George Deukmejian in 1985.
He was badly hurt while riding his bicycle last April.
“His recovery was difficult, complicated and extraordinarily painful,” said Karen Dalton, the San Diego County Superior Court spokeswoman. “He chose not to continue this battle.”
Bollman is survived by his wife, Susan, and two grown children, Carolyn and Thomas. Funeral arrangements are being made.
