I assume Canadian retailers were not considered :frowning:

I am VERY shocked that I dont see RA, Mission Bay, and a number of others on that list. I have to wonder what the criteria was to pick that list.

Hmmm, I wonder about their methodology. I am very surprised to see Hudson Trail Outfitters on the list based on my visits to their stores. It’s like calling Foot Locker a great running shoe store.

Dave in VA

BICYCLE PLANET / Austin, TX

Never heard of this one. Based on the link, I’m wondering if it’s supposed to be Bicycle Sport Shop. (if so, the link is still wrong – one too many S’s – should read www.bicyclesportshop.com)

There is no way I would consider The Off Ramp one of the best retailers in the Bay Area. At least not from a consumer standpoint.

Where’s R&A? I thought they were the mammer-jammer bike shop. Every bike, every size, ever color, always in stock. Isn’t their mission statement something along those lines?

I was wondering that too, the Bike world in west des moines, IA is a nice store but uhh not that nice. I mean its about the size of a large box and until this year they really only had trek and giant. Not the biggest selection in the world.

Grant

It does seem odd.

Anyone from central Ohio ever heard of “Roll”? I drive down that road frequently and I’ve never noticed any sort of bike shop where it is supposed to be.

i’m not surprised to see Breakaway Bicycles. the “Kalamazoo” shop as listed is actually in Portage. Breakaway also has locations in Muskegon and Grand Haven. my shop of choice for years and as of last year, my sponsor.

everyone i have referred over the years to Paul, Steve, Hank, Jeff, Richard…and all the rest…have been exceptionally well taken care of, and there have been lots. they support i don’t know how many multisport and mntn bike events throughout the area.

and the fact that Breakaway is expanding and enhancing multisport offerings with, for example, the addition of Quintana Roo to a previously impressive manufacturer lineup, doesn’t hurt either

LIVERMORE CYCLERY / Livermore, CA

Great shop and great people. Unfortunatly not a tri bike in the place, Just road, Mt. Bike and BMX.

Dave

I agree…this list is very suspect…what did it take to get on list?

Have you been in the shop? They may have it all, but there’s a lot of stories out there about people having trouble getting them to sell it to you. In a lot of ways, it can be like walking into Home Depot. You know it’s in there somewhere, but good luck getting someone to pay attention to you and show it to you.

Customer service is widely reported to be either great or the worst ever. My experience is the second, but plenty of others have the first. So if customer service was considered, I’d imagine their avg ends up being lower than many others due to some really bad experiences. That alone might drag it off the list.

Tom doesn’t make the list?

My first thought when I see a list like this: how many people voted (is this just the editorial staff of one publication), what were their qualifications (do I get to vote if I’m a rep, an owner, do I have to be an industry journalist, etc) and what criteria was used (number of bikes in inventory, number of bikes sold, gross sales, number of different brands, etc)?

I live about a half-mile from one of the shops and can tell you it probably got on due to the reputation it earned from 1984-2003. I worked there in college when it was voted one of the best by Bicycling Magazine also. It has seen 2 ownership changes in the last 4 years and while it looks nice, it is not a shop that I would rate as superior in any way.

Art’s in SLO is a ROCKING shop as I also used to work with one of the current owners. Scott Smith is a great guy, former Tri-Fed (he’s old like that) All-American, gives back to the sport by sponsoring local races, organizing groups for newbies & vets, and he’s really involved in his community.

I love Art’s. I spend way too much time hanging around there.

When I’m in NYC I stop by R&A and drool. I’ve wasted several hours in there over a few visits and always had a knowledgable salesperson to talk with. I feel bad for never spending a dime but they don’t seem to mind. I always got the impression that they’ll waste time with someone and make a fortune off the next guy. I usually go early in the year when the weathers crappy so that might make a difference and I also go during the week when they’re slow. I have read the negatives about R&A but I think all shops get slammed from time to time and people think they should be treated like gold even though they’re just there to ‘shop’ and they’re going to go home to buy online. Just my observation.

I suspect this is a paid listing of some kind. In my area, Livemore Cyclery is good, but hardly the best. The Off Ramp doesn’t belong and Chain Reaction (just a few miles away) should high on the list. And w(here)tf is Bikesport Michigan ferkrisakes?

Just keep telling yourself that ')
.

Art’s ROCKS! If you spend time in SLO anyway, check out the SLO County Dept of Parks & Rec Tri in July. It’s deceptively difficult given the distance (18m bike, 4.5m run) and when you’re done you can hit the Blue Sky Cafe…EXCELLENT food for your post-race grub-on!

“what criteria was used?”

I think that is key. Like many businesses, the bike business is becoming very specialized. Let’s face it, the type of shop that would be a hit with the ST crowd is either a high-end road shop or that even rarer bird the high-end triathlon shop that sells bikes.
