Just started wearing bib shorts this year and decided I generally
prefer them to tri shorts for riding. Does anyone wear bib shorts
for a triathlon if it is a wetsuit legal race? I imagine in a non-wetsuit
race you would get a lot of drag in the water, but I’m assuming
in the wetsuit it can’t possibly matter.
Might be a bit snug fitting. If you get a good set of tri shorts you will never go back and as a bonus save some time in transition.
Did it once, no problem. Some pads are a bit bulky for the run though.
I wouldn’t recommend it only because of the shamie soaking up water and acting like a sponge while riding your bike, causing some serious discomfort on a long ride.
Just my .02, as referenced above, some have done it and it works fine.

Have only done it w/ the Desoto 400 Mile Bib and Tribib – no problems at all.
Any other bib? I’d be afraid of ending up w/ a soggy diaper between my legs.
Use a bib with gel and not foam and you are ok for the run also (did Roth that way).
for several IMs i’ve worn bike shorts with tri shorts under them. peel the wetsuit off in T1 and bike in the bike shorts, peel them off in T2 and run in the ‘almost no pad’ tri shorts. works fine and is pretty quick.
good luck.
The bib I was considering was the Desoto 400 Mile Bib.
Were you saying you had done it in that and it worked ok?
Or were you just taking about the Desoto Tribib?
I have done two halfs with the desoto tribib under the wetsuit with absolutely no problems. Love those shorts!
I’ve done a couple IM’s with the 400 Mile Bib under wet suit – worked great. I didn’t run the mary in them though – decided to strip the bibs and put on running shorts.
I just raced for the first time in an SLS3 trisuit. It has a small, firm chamois, which was great. It was NO PROBLEM on the run. The suit has no leg grippers either. They also make a short. I suppose the pad is the same, but can’t remember for sure.
I haven’t tried a pair of the DSS riviera shorts, but they are supposed to have a small, firm pad as well, but I was looking for a trisuit as I’ve never had one before.
i wear a bib under a wetsuit. now, with tri short bibs, even easier.
I have Emilio’s tribibs–2 pair. One from 2004 and one from 2011. I love them both, but have never raced in either.
I would love a thin firm (non fleece pad) in there, like the older craft trishort pad from 2006.
Just to follow up in case anyone searches this in the future, I did
the race with the Desoto 400 Mile bib and it was great. Maybe
the Desoto Tribib would be even better, but I certainly had no
complaints and felt very comfortable during the bike.
We are the first and only company that offers a tribib. Works great under a wetsuit.
Forza Tri Bib
I haven’t yet had the chance to use my Desoto Forza tri Bibs under a wetsuit, but I just used them for the first time on a 56 mile ride yesterday and have never felt as comfortable in the “aero” position for such a long ride. There was no having to adjust my shorts up or shirt down to ensure my lower back wasn’t exposed to the AZ sun. I was impressed at the level of compression I felt. Very snug…but not too snug. Can’t wait to use them in a race.
how would one run in the tribibs though? they are likely great for the bike, but aren’t they restrictive for the run?

great question. if you read the description, you will see these are simply trishorts, but instead of them finishing at the waist, they finish with bibs straps. they have the same pad as our top of the line FORZA TRI SHORTS, so they are great for the run as well.
please let me know if this does not answer your question.
For reals as a a cyclist just dipping a toe back in triathlon I’m going to need to buy these. There isn’t a short in the world as comfortable as a pair of bibs.
I just picked up my Forza bib this year, raced my first tri in them over the weekend and they performed just as well as in training… which is flawless. I wear a riviera jersey over the top and had it all under my wetsuit for teh swim. No chaffing, no restrictions. It was unnoticeable in the swim and comfortable on the bike and run.
