I just picked up a pair of Sugoi MidZero Bib Knickers for $120. Now that I have them at home I’m not sure that I am digging them. The padding seems too “saggy” for lack of a better word. Anyone have experience with these or can suggest something with a little better build quality even if it costs a bit more (though not too much more)?
get some of the higher end sugoi stuff? the chamois on the rs knickers is certainly stiff (rs bib shorts = the bomb).
or, stop buying knickers. get some bike shorts, some tights, and you’re set. you have the option of wearing some long underwear in between the shorts and the tights.
that’s my approach. i’ve never bought knickers. riding in -5 is just fine with long underwear & tights from craft.
(craft knows how to make good winter-wear!)
I love my knickers but hate the saggy pads. Solution take a seam ripper, 15-20 2inutes and voila, knickers with no pad. Now just wear your regular short under the knickers and you have a set-up that is warmer than knickers alone and more comfortable.
I have had a bunch of different brands of knickers, and I love the Descente Coldout Knicker. I would put it up against any knicker at any price by any brand. I am a sales rep in the industry, but I do not work for Descente, just love their clothes.
I have 3 pair.
For those who say not to buy knickers, you won’t convince me. I love knickers. I actually don’t like tights. It is knickers or legwarmers for me. If it is above 40 and blow 60, knickers everytime.
They actually had another Sugoi knickers for $175. I just couldn’t see paying that much. I guess it might be worth it in the end. I did see some tights at another store but there was too much debate between the employees about whether they should be worn over or under your shorts. It was pretty comical but I just decided to see what another store had. I’ve been surprised that so few shops are stocked up with cold weather gear right now. Slim pickings so far.
I love my knee warmers, knickers when its 45-65, and take them off when it warms up which is often on a ride here in CO. Have to be one of my favorite clothes purchases.
I have some knee warmer but I have a hard time keeping them up. Becomes a pain in the ass. Plus I can’t ever remember taking them off during a ride.
I have the Sugoi MidZero in tight and the RS in knicker. While the chamois in the RS is nicer, the RS fabric is much more summer oriented – not warm at all.
The Descente Couldout is an excellent alternative, as is the Craft knicker.
“I have had a bunch of different brands of knickers, and I love the Descente Coldout Knicker.”
ditto that. i have several descente winter garments, my favorite is the knicker. in fact, i have two complete sets, one XL which was too big, then got the L which is perfect. if any big boy wants my too-big collection, drop me a line. they’re unused, i’ll sell for half price.
I’ve had (and still have) Sugoi, Descente, Pearl Izumi and Castelli but now I have found the best ever, Santini. Italian made, super smooth, and more importantly, the most comfortable padding (get the gel).
http://www.nonstopciclismo.com/ these guys are top notch.
Little known fact: there is a Classifieds forum!

Knickers??? I can’t believe Fatbastard would be caught dead in Knickers. Are you really giving up the kilt? Oh, wait, perhaps under the kilt and with your white knee socks you’d be fine.
Come late December/January, you’re gonna need some tights (at least if you ride in mornings). Tights should be worn OVER cycling shorts, but UNDER your kilt.
