Best winter open water swimming

Let’s say I was willing to get on a plane and fly anywhere to get the best open water swimming.

Probably means Southern Hemisphere or near the equator. Imperatives:

  • clean clear flat water
  • FLAT water which probably means protected from wind
  • variety; more than 1 Location
  • not silly hard to get to once you get off the plane

Where?

Not exactly what you are asking but come to the Clermont Lakefront, any Wednesday, for our weekly Open Water Worlds Swim Session. Great clear, cool water in the Winter but not cold, usually flat but occasionally not. We have a set swim course where we do a workout by Jarrod Shoemaker with the poles setup, but you can knock yourself out and swim across the lake if your prefer. MCO, has to be one of the easiest airports to travel to and cheap.

Kailua bay. It NEVER gets old swimming there.

I’m thinking something more like kei kecil, or the andaman and Nicobar islands.

This will be my 4th year in a row for this. Great place and great swimming. Not something that you can do on your own though.

You aren’t talking about winter swimming. You are talking about extending the summer swim season.

Turn left on Bob’s Gap. Turn right on Valyermo. Keep zig-zagging your way to CA14 South. Then, I-5 South, I-405 South, and I-10 West. Merge on CA-1 North. When you notice sand under your tires, stop the car, and jump into the Ocean!
You wanna fly there? Drive to Palmdale, fly to LAX, walk 1.5 miles west, and jump in.

You lucky bastard! The only clean, clear, flat water around here in the winter can be driven on by a F-350 hauling a 2-story ice house and four snow machines and requires a 3-foot auger to get to the fish! …and you wanna fly somewhere else…

Do you mean your winter? Are you concerned about water temp? Races or non races?

There are ocean swims all over Australia from Oct to May. There’s a beautiful 1km and 3km race at Heron Island in Nov, at the Great Barrier Reef. Flat warm weather (there is a bit of current to contend with if you swim around the island).

Otherwise Huskisson, any of the Sydney Harbour Beaches … there are a few options in Sydney. There’s a list of swim races on the ocean swims website, however you just need to be aware of currents and rips at beaches if swimming on your own.

If you’re looking for cold water sorry I don’t dabble in that lol.

Interesting

What’s the temp like end of November / start of December ?

I am visiting and might see if I can get a hall pass from family … lol

It really depends, but I think the water was even a crazy 80 degrees up until Christmas last year, but then it dropped like a rock and by the middle of January was in the mid 60s.

Thank you

Hey Dan. Austin, TX has great OWS in the winter and year-round.

The gym where I teach cycling classes has it’s own private lake with a permanent OWS course with bouys that is 750 M around. Perfect temps in the winter. No lifeguards. Visitors can get a day pass for $15. Without trying to sound like a homer, it really is the coolest setup for a gym that I have ever seen. The USAT Aquathlon Nationals will be held at this facility in October this year. https://pureaustin.com/

About 15 minutes away is the iconic Barton Springs Pool which is a constant 68 degrees year round and fed by underground springs. It is so big that calling it a pool is almost a misnomer. Very clear water. It is about 1/3 mile of swimmable length from one end to the other. This is a public pool and there are lifeguards during most of the day. https://austintexas.gov/department/barton-springs-pool

I would recommend giving this a go. I did my first winter none wetsuit this year and I’ll be doing the same next winter. It’s different but very rewarding. It’s not Baltic where I live but cold enough to be cracking ice on occasion.

Lake Taupo, NZ

You can drink while you swim (assuming you’re more than 10 meters from shore) and many entry points

It’s flat in the morning, though you’ll get wind later on.

Not crazy hard to get to - either car/bus from Auckland or easier, just do the 45 minute flight.

I have never been, but what about New Caledonia?
It’s a big island with plenty of different places to swim. with spectacular clear water lagoons protected by reef.
Some of the outlying smaller islands might be cool to explore as well.
I’m sure there is wind, but if you are on leeward side I’d expect some calm water always somewhere.

Looks like a good place to bike and run too.

now you’re talking. what i did find was kei kecil. look that up. google that. however, fjords are good. swimtrek has 2 tours upcoming, the fjords of oman and isla espirito santu off of la paz, mexico. look at that on a map. there’s a reader here who takes that baja mexico trip.

that mexico trip is looking better and better to me.
