Opinions on best wheelset for IMWI? I was planning on using my Zipp disc 999 with Zipp 808 front, but after struggling up the hills (but flying on the flats and downhills) now I’m thinking about using my Krysium Mavic Elites (training wheels) for the hills…or possibly buying a Zipp 808 rear to match my Zipp 808 front…
So you have done the course with both the 999 setup and a different time with the krysium setup? Have you been able to compare a time between the two sets of wheels?
Were you training on the course with the 999s, or the Ksyriums? I say go with the disc. That thing is so light, any weight savings from the ksyrium are going to be negligable. What gearing were you riding? Maybe that was the problem?
I can tell you that when I practiced the course, my gears were out of whack, so my smallest gear was 42x17. That was INSUFFICIENT!!
I did it a few months ago on the krysium and twice this month on the 999. I had a few other “changes, etc.” so it’s not a fair comparison. I do know the the disc feel tough to get up the hills, but flies elsewhere…
I’ve trained recently on the 999’s (tough climbs, but flies on flats and declines). I trained a few months ago on the Ksyriums…easier to climb but not quite as fast on flats and declines. There were many other variables, however, so not a fair comparison. I plan on trying the Ksyriums again this weekend…
First thought may be also that you’re coming off of your training (or last push) and in/at tapering. Those first few weeks are going to leave you flat. If you’re in a big volume week and getting ready to taper, your legs are probably not fresh. This can lead to a little anxiety, especially before IM. Keep that in mind before you panic and rush out to buy an 808 over an already great wheelset.
No matter what people say, IMWis is perfect for a disc. Of course you have to be able to move it, but all of the “fear” about using a disc there is without good reason. Use the 999- you will be faster than any training set up.
Like CCF said, pay attention to your gearing. I’ll be there with a disk, and I’ve raced Wis before. I’m running a shimano 10 speed, 12-24 with a 39/53 up front. With the mountains that I train in, it works for me on any hill no matter how steep.
Don’t forget about the mental side as well- you’l FEEL faster, so you’ll be faster. Meantime, relax, have fun at the race, and recover fully during the taper. You’ll do great.
999 - 1585g
Kysiriums - 1500g (for the top of the line SL).
So you are saving 85g of weight. Moment of inertia, which really matters more than weight, is higher for the Kysiriums because the weight is much further out on the perimeter (the disc has a relatively low moment of inertia for its weight because the weight is evenly distributed).
The reason you are feeling slow on the Zipps is that I’m guessing you have not yet swapped out those Tufos yet. Grrrr…
Buy some Vittoria/Veloflex/Conti tubulars. Ride the 999. Go faster.
Well yeah, you are right, i dont know what fast bike splits are. In fact i never had the fastest bike split in a IM race, and to be honest i will never have one (sorry Herbert)
I used a HED 3 Disc last year, and the HED 3 tri-spoke wheel in the front, and they worked great. This year I’m using the Zipp disc, with the HED 3 tri-spoke in the front. Do the disc!!!
Jordan, you know your shit! Okay, OKAY, I’ll try to get teh Veloflex Records put on my 999’s next week.
By the way, I now have the 172.5 FSA K-force cranks…and I’m back in my old form HAMMERING my friends again…WHAT A DIFFERENCE over the “other” R-cranks…
