Best way to store salt caps

Currently I keep them in my bento box, but I’ve dropped a few while trying to get it from the bottom of the box to my mouth… any suggestions (DIY preferred) for storing and dispensing salt caps during a ride/race? I’ve seen the SaltStick thing, but $20+ for .10 worth of plastic??? Gimme a break…

In an empty NUUN tube.

Good idea. I had also read that one of those M&M’s containers will work too. Now I have to finish off the disgusting Nuun tabs…

Salt Stick – placed inside the extension. holds 6 - if you need lots of salt, put one in each bar.

The Salt Stick is probably the best way, but I’m cheap. When you say “inside the extension”, what do you mean?

i heard they absorb more quickly as a suppository and you get to skip first pass metabolism.

I’ll take your word for it… may not be a pleasant sight for guy behind you though…

I have profile design bars - this is what I did. I took this image from the salt stick website, campatible bars link. it has a lot of photos and ideas for installation, but this is the cleanest.

in all seriousness, pill vial or the monday-sunday pill dispensers velcroed to the top tube.

Here’s a neat trick I picked up last season from DKT…

It works for any “pill” (salt, endurolytes, etc).

Put a short strip of double-sided tape like this on your aero-bar “wing” outside of your arm rests. Press a row of pills on that (include some extras), and giddyup.

I was very skeptical about this at first, but hey - if DKT rocks it, who am I to argue? And it actually works really well - I used this technique for HIM/IM and other long distance rides, and although I may lose a pill here & there on bad bumps, they stay there impressively well overall.

The goods are then dead simple to grab & use, and that 3M tape pulls off your bar totally clean when done.

Cheers, Chris

I had already YouTubed SaltStick installation and saw the Macca video - now I’m wanting one except I have Vision bars and the ends are closed… I guess I could hacksaw them open.

Might be better for the run, but “crack baggies” (tiny ziploc bags you can get at craft stores)…you can put 1-4 in each bag, and use as needed. No danger of spilling a whole container. Toss the bags at the aid stations or else put back into your bento box or in your jersey/singlet pockets. And no annoying rattling sound.

Buy a 99 cent styptic pencil and throw away the pencil and use the container. Works great for me.

Am I stupid for just putting them in a ziplock bag and putting that in my jersey pocket? It worked fine for me.

I’ve had good success using a Tic-Tac container thing. I use Endurolytes and they come out of there easy enough and the little flip cap thingy on there is easy to get open. I just keep the container in my jersey pocket.

No, I’m just clumsy after 100+ miles and sodium can make or break my run.

I’ve used Bento box, ziplock bags, and old nuuns containers as well as Salt Stick dispenser. If it’s raining like IMLP '08, Salt stick dispenser gets jammed up with partially dissolved capsules.

I found two containers that are about $1 that I like better. First is a round flat container at REI that the top snaps on and off and secondly a pill container at Target that says AM/PM that has two sections, drop some still have half left. Both are flatter and fit better in my bento box and tri top pockets than something round. I have one in my bento box, second in my tri top and third as back up in SN.

Good tip on the rain issue. I’ll probably have a ziplock of backups in my bento box just in case and regardless of whatever storage solution I go with. I’m doing CdA and I’ve heard weather can be unpredictable.

At the risk of sounding like a dick, I’ll say “in your pantry”.
I just don’t think that salt tabs are the solution. Get your electrolyte replacement in your fluids and you will then keep your body’s electrolyte balance in tact throughout the entire workout or race.

True - I have thought about just dropping caps into my water, but as I replace bottles at aid stations I’ll have to take time to open up bottles and drop caps in them. I’ll be back to square one with having to store them on the bike.
