I am thinking of mounting a camera on my bike. Mostly to record some fun sections of road I ride but really for safety should a incident happen where video would be important. I think I would want to mount it under my handle bars but open to hearing what others have done.
What camera’s do you recommend? Can they just loop and loop until I need the footage? Is front or back better?
ugly as sin… but has some good features that hexagon
I have many but use Fly12/Fly6 combo the most. When I care about making vids with things like power, HR and so on I will use the Virb30 on the front.
I could care less what it looks like. Will it work is what I care about. Since I have been looking for years for this type of product, hope I did not waste money since I bought 2 of them.
What will be key is the phone app and what it can do. A camera is a camera, but the sw is the magic
The Hexagon looks like a joke. The brightness looks incredibly weak in all of those videos and the camera spec is worse than the $40 Amazon action cameras that can record 90-120 minutes. It’s strange they have no specs for the brightness. I would much rather buy a decent tail light and halfway decent camera separately. I have a YI Lite camera that can constantly be found for ~$80 and records for 2 hours at way better resolution than the Hexagon and the image stabilization seems to work somewhat. The Garmin Virb 360 camera is one of the coolest things I have ever seen, but I believe the battery only lasts an hour and they start at $800.
Some say rear is more important than front from a safety perspective, but I don’t know what data there is to back that up. The only riding related use my camera gets is cyclocross.
If safety (more accurately, catching somebody after the fact) is your main goal, the Fly 6 is a good choice. The video loops, it comes with the SD card and mounting hardware (that stuff adds up!), it lasts 6 hours with the camera and a pulse/flash and it’s a known commodity…it works. The video quality isn’t that great, but the battery life blows most action cameras away. The Fly 12 is a bit pricy for a front light. A $100 dollar light and $100 camera would give you better video for the same amount of time and a much better front light.
