Best ventilated tt aero helmet recommendations?

I’m currently wearing the LG P-09, it fits great and it’s fast, but I’d like to get something with a bit better ventilation. I already have an “aero road” helmet, the Evade 2 but am looking for something with a visor for race day.

I’ve been looking at the new POC Procen helmet. Supposed to be aero, but more forgiving than POCs goofier option. And it has a ton of ventilation they claim reduces drag.

I spoke to a guy that tried one and it sounds like a winner. But not available for us mortals until September.

2 options come to mind, mostly bc I just tested them on someone. Even though the aerohead was his fastest helmet he said both the Rudy wing and the Smith Jetstream TT helmets were better ventilated.

The rudy was around 6w slower then the Jetstream and the jetstream was about 5w slower than the aerohead.

Or the other way to look at it was the aerohead beat the Rudy wingspan by ~10-11w and the jetstream by ~5-6w

Are you removing the front plug on the P-09? If not that will increase airflow as will using sunglasses vs the visor it comes with

hope that helps

Brian, I know that you’ve said again and again - “Different helmets have different results on different people. The only way to know is to test them out.” That being said, in general, how much % of cda change do you see between the Giro Vanquish and the Giro Aerohead? I ask % because everyone’s watts are going to be different based on what power they generate. Thanks.

Was this the Rudy Wing, or the Wingspan? I believe those are two different helmets? The old Wingspan is widely renown to have not been very good, while the new Wing is supposedly miles better. Regardless, I hate the naming decision of making them so close.

As mentioned above, helmets are obviously different for different people, based on countless factors. For me, the Rudy Project The Wing (the newest version) actually tested better in the field than my old Bell Javelin or my Aerohead. That was both with the front vent cover installed and uninstalled. With the vent cover removed, The Wing is the most well ventilated aero helmet I have ever owned/worn.

My n=1.

The Giro Aerohead (for me) was significantly cooler than the Rudy Wingspan (not the new Wing…haven’t tried that one), even with the front vent cover on the Wingspan removed. I’ve used it on very hot days (ex. last year’s nationals with a heat index over 100^F) without an issue. YMMV.

I think the reason is the significant protrusion of the helmet out past the forehead (and the vent channels this allows). You can see the channels at the bottom of this pic:

Another ST athlete (BryanCD) was tested by Brian and was a bit faster with the Rudy, showing helmets are individual.
He also tested and wrote up his experience in the forum along with this hydration under the jersey results

The Abus GameChanger TT, and also the Tri version, seem to be more like what you describe: https://mobil.abus.com/int/Consumer/Bike-helmets/Road/GameChanger-TT-Movistar-Team-20-M?type=pdp

I haven’t seen any test data and Annemiek van Vleuten only uses it for team events so one can infer that there is an aero compromise, but for a hot and hilly ironman events, it might make sense.

Hmmm good question. I know I’ve answered that before but don’t remember the results. My guess is that you’re going to see ~ .004 -.008 CdA decrease with the Aerohead over the Vanquish

It was the Wing. I rarely if ever bother to test the wingspan or whatever their other wing was.

I hope Rudy doesn’t name the new helmet they are working on Wing something
